Meet Taylor Kirk of Tay Mo’Nae Presents

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Kirk.

So, before we jump into specific questions, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I started writing in school and used it as a hobby. I always felt like the black sheep or the forgotten child in my life so writing became an escape. I always considered becoming a famous writer, that would appear on talk shows to talk about my award-winning books but never had the nerve to submit my actual work. One day I started posting short stories in different Facebook groups and a publisher was told about and she reached out to me. What started off as a trial three-book contract ended up me finding a career. Recently I also started a lip gloss company called Too Much Gloss, LLC. I’ve gotten a lot of support, which I am grateful for.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
No, it has not. The writing industry is just as cutthroat as the music industry. It’s a challenge finding your lane and readers that will rock with you your whole journey. Book themes that readers enjoy change like the seasons and if you don’t have a solid fan base you’ll be overlooked. Also, I learned that you cannot trust everyone, the industry is full of people who are out for self. All this isn’t bad, however. I did learn the business side of publishing and how to market my books and brand on my own. Since going independent I’ve also been able to find my lane and build my following surrounding it. My lip gloss business has been smooth, however. I was able to find a vendor early that was reliable and eventually, I got to the point where I started making my own lip glosses.

Please tell us about Tay Mo’Nae Presents.
I recently broke away from my publisher and started publishing my books independently. I basically build my brand the way I want. I create different marketing strategies to find out what works for me. I also get to create black love for readers to fall in love with. One thing I think that sets me apart from a lot of people in the industry is I try and make each book personable and relatable. As for my lip gloss business, I believe finding something that works for you is the most important. It’s a popular field to go into so find something that distinguishes you from the competition. Also, make sure you stay consistent with marketing your product.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I say 50/50. I have good months and bad months when it comes to writing and in life.
