Meet Taylor King of Espionage in Mid-City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor King.

Taylor, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’m a small town gal from Pasadena who started working in retail when I was 15 years old at a cute gift store down the street from my house. My parents always made sure I had a job throughout the school. That is what has given me the work ethic I have today. I love receiving gifts as well as giving them so it was only natural that I would open a gift shop curated with vintage, new and locally sourced items.

Has it been a smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road. Aside from managing employees who don’t ever want to work, I do all the marketing and behind the scenes myself. I have never paid for any type of advertising but have grown this business for six years by word of mouth and a great product.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Espionage story. Tell us more about the business.
We are known for our curated gift packages. Our clients will email us with who they want to give a gift to, the occasion and how much they would like to spend. We then send them a few ideas back and once decided have it wrapped and ready for pick up or shipping! It’s very easy. What sets our gifts apart from the standard gift basket you may see online is that each one is different. We tailor the gift to each individual and always try to incorporate something vintage. This gives the receiver a sense that their gifter spent a lot of time picking out each item. We work with a lot of talent agencies and have curated gifts for varies celebrities such as Oprah, Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson, Peter Dinklage and Renee Zellweger. We can really put together a gift for any occasion; birthdays, weddings, congrats, new baby, spa, game night. Our gift wrapping is also very chic in a black box with our gold foil logo and black ribbon.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
In the next 5-10 years, I hope to see us have more of an online presence. We just launched our website where you can order the gift packages there. It seems the online work is taking over at a fast pace but the who experience of our store is captured when you walk in the door. People have said they want to live in here or feel like they’re on a Parisian or New York vacation. Parisians and New Yorkers have also said that our store makes them feel like they are at home and that LA lacks curiosity shops like ours.

  • Gift packages can start at any price range but we recommend $100 as a base
