Today we’d like to introduce you to Taylor Gallegos.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I’m originally from Boulder, Colorado. I moved to Southern California in 2011 to pursue my art career in a larger market. I’ve been painting and drawing for my entire life. I went to school and got a BFA in 2006.
I’ve been doing live art at concerts and various events for years as an entertainment element, and the idea came up through a friend to paint at a wedding. I tried it out, attempting to capture the wedding ceremony and it didn’t go super smoothly. Weddings take place quickly, lighting changes, people are moving in and out of place. I went back to the drawing board, made some adjustments to my approach and figured out a way that I could make it work.
Now I’m doing weddings all over Southern California and abroad, painting couple’s wedding days as they take place. The paintings are a great keepsake for the couple, it’s entertaining for wedding guests, and I have a blast doing it.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t always been smooth. The actual creation process of a live wedding painting was a challenge to get figured out. There are a handful of artists that do the same thing, and I’m sure they all have their own special way of going about it. I had to find my technique and unique path, and that takes time. Through the learning process, I’ve really taught myself how to paint figures, portraits, and landscapes. Challenge is often the path of growth, and this has been no exception.
Painting aside, the business element has really been a discovery process. I have a business partner named Tony Watters. We met years ago, began working together with my art and then developed the Live Wedding Art concept together. We’ve had to learn the ins and outs of the wedding industry, build ourselves a brand, develop the business structure and learn everything about the workings of a small business in California. The whole journey is one challenge after another. They key for us has been to just keep going.
Please tell us about Live Wedding Art.
Live Wedding Art is a two-part business. The first is selling a keepsake memory in the form of a painting of a couple’s wedding day. The second is the entertainment service which interacts with and engages with a couple’s wedding guests.
We specialize in paintings where the couple and guests are recognizable and look great. My background and specialty are figures and portraiture. My paintings will be much more portrait driven and more realistic than some other wedding painters. Even if the request is to do a more impressionistic style, the couple will still be recognizable.
As a company, we’re proud of being sharp in our approach to everything. From the way that we set up, to the easels, canvas, and palette, to the framing, to the painting and the portraits, the boxing and shipping, we want our product and service to be top notch. We really strive to create the best painting and the best overall experience for our clients every step of the way.
Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I have so many, but I will say that my favorite memory from childhood would have to be a ski trip to the mountains in Colorado when my extended family flew in for my grandfather’s birthday. The whole family was there, it was all fun, smiles, laughs and love for 5 or so days straight. I feel really blessed to have gotten to experience that.
