Meet Tavetta Patterson of Abundant Life Publications

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tavetta Patterson.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I am a native of Gary, Indiana. I began writing and public speaking at the age of eight. Once I discovered my gifts, I invested my life using my gifts to help people discover and live their purpose. I am a Published Author of five books and a Contributing Author featured in two books.

As a high school student, I experienced my first published work in a national collaboration book for children. July 2002, my first complete book was published entitled “The Tongue of Life” a collection of poems and speeches. August 2, 2014 I released my second and third books, a riveting novel entitled, “The Secrets We Keep” and an inspirational memoir entitled, “The Bridge that Brought Me Over.” August 1, 2015, I released a book with my husband, Roosevelt D. Patterson, entitled, “Marriage Truths.” The book was written as a roadmap to help people thrive in marriage. I also released a book entitled, “From Mourning to the Morning.” The book was written in memory of my Mother, Addie Porter who passed Monday August 5, 2013 at 7a.m. as me and my husband stood by her bedside. The day was one of the most painful experiences of my life; however, I was determined that my pain would not be in vain.

After therapy and going through the grief recovery process, I was invited to collaborate on a book entitled “Learning to Love Me.” The book includes stories written by 20 different women from 10 different states. After that collaboration, I had an opportunity to cultivate a California connection when I was chosen to participate in the Freedom Writers Institute in Long Beach, California. During the summer of 2016, I met awesome world-changers and earned my certification as a Freedom Writer Teacher.

I am the Founder of Abundant Life Publications, a first-class consulting and publishing company established in 2006. Through that company, I have published eight books and ten magazines. I also created a television program, wrote the initial television program treatment; then produced and hosted 13 television programs. Today, I help other people discover and live their purpose by partnering with our company to help make their dreams come true as Artists, Authors, Public Speakers, Business and Community Leaders.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Life has not been a smooth road for me, but every challenge has made me wiser and stronger. I grew up in neighborhoods with high poverty, high crime and low graduation rates. However, I had a determined mother who was a single parent and she guarded my purpose until I could understand my purpose. Her determination motivated me to graduate in the top 10 of my high school class in 1997 and I went straight to college. When I returned to Gary, Indiana I began community organizing and I founded Gary Life Education Initiative Incorporated. Through that organization, I have provided mentoring, leadership development, educational programs and services for 21,000 children.

Another challenge that I faced was being hospitalized in Chicago for six months as a child. Then I survived third-degree burns to my face as an elementary school student. As a child, I also survived the trauma of my childhood friends, family members, classmates and neighborhood friends being murdered in the streets. However, I was able to turn all the pain into purpose through writing.

As a teen and young adult, my life was impacted by domestic violence and writing was essential to my healing process. After I survived the pain of watching my mother die, I was able to turn that pain into purpose by writing a program that I began teaching in 2018. It is very rewarding that I get to help people through the grief recovery process by teaching online, by telephone, at colleges and corporations.

During the summer of 2019, I survived being diagnosed with blood clots in my lungs. During my recovery process from that experience, I saw life from a totally different perspective and I am more focused on living every day with purpose on purpose. Every victory over every challenge that I have ever experienced in life is the result of the blessing, favor, grace, guidance and love of God.

I am excited about all the people we have the opportunity to help through Abundant Life Publications. I just finished publishing a book for my Husband Roosevelt D. Patterson, entitled, “Life Worth Living in Faith.” I also finished writing ten books during the pandemic of 2020. I will be working on sharing those books to motivate people to keep living their purpose. I am also developing an apparel and home line to share positive affirmations.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from childhood is spending time with my Uncle Dee Dee after skating at the local skating rink. My Uncle Dee Dee treated me like I imagined a good father would treat his daughter. He stepped in to take care of me, which helped lessen the pain of not having a present father.
