Meet Tatiana Kovalskaia of Concept Buro

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatiana Kovalskaia.

Hi Tatiana, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Russia in the family of an honored artist, since childhood, I was surrounded by an atmosphere of creativity. My grandfather often took me to his studio and I could watch for hours the process of creating paintings, decorative veneer panels, charcoal sketches. I drew well at school, but then I made my choice in favor of ballet, I loved to dance and graduated from a choreographic studio, then a modern dance school. Like many teenagers, I looked for myself and tried, at the age of 21 I got a job in a florist shop, where I worked for three years as a chief florist, participated in international competitions, and won prizes. Thanks to the owner of the store, all the florists of the store were trained in Lithuania by a famous designer, at that time I realized that the design principles are the same. Later I did the design of my house, not being a professional yet, but according to the reviews of my friends and acquaintances, it was one of my best projects. So I started my career as a designer, helped decorate restaurants, consulted, and selected furniture and accessories. Then I got a job in a design studio, where I studied Archikad in three months, as I understood that taste alone was not enough and skills were needed to directly master architectural programs.

This knowledge helped me to take a very important step in my life and open my own design studio. At first, I was the manager of four employees, later eight people. I worked for 12-14 hours and after a couple of years, I realized that I don’t want to be a design production conveyor, I want to raise my professionalism to the level of world designers and work all over the world. In 2010, I completed design courses in St. Martins in London, received several international projects, successfully implemented them by developing a system for maintaining author’s online support. She was admitted to the Association of Designers of Russia. Two years ago, fate gave me the chance to move to America, to Los Angeles. Throughout the months of the pandemic, she led projects online, both in Russia and abroad.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
As in all businesses, there are aspects that I don’t want to mention. At the time of my formation, I could not afford to choose clients and sometimes, I had to deal with dishonest people. I have unpaid projects, one statement of claim, for which I had to return the money in full, although the design of the project was approved and agreed. Now I look at these circumstances as a misunderstanding and a good life lesson. Only as a whole person are you able to attract people and circumstances that you desire into life. Now I am surrounded by self-sufficient, honest and empathic people, grateful clients and a luxurious portfolio of my works that I have realized over 18 years of my activity and I can be proud of them.

As you know, we’re big fans of Concept Buro. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am an Interior designer with 18 years of experience. I am the owner of “Concept Buro” which provides wide range of services in the field of designing, architecture and decoration. The long-term experience of cooperation with reliable contractors and suppliers, detailed approach and complete knowledge of the modern market allows me to work effectively worldwide, adapting to individual needs and desires of each client. In addition, I cooperate with large international architectural bureaus and have trusting relationships with a large number of the famous factories suppliers of elite furniture, plumbing fixtures and finishing materials. There are more than 150 of my completed projects and each one is unique and inimitable in its own way. I develop various stylistic solutions and concepts using only the most advanced design project presentation tools. The draft part of the project is made in 3Dmax, this provides the customer with the opportunity to see the design concept in the form of a photorealistic image of the space. The architectural part of the project, plans and sections contain complete information about the size, quantity and location of interior items. The specification for the project indicates the name of the product used in the project, references to the manufacturer and supplier of the product, the cost. I can proudly say that during my work I have graduated 25 interns, teaching them the basics of design, and they all work now as professional independent designers.

I know all the stages of working on a design project and can work independently in architectural programs and 3dmax, which allows me to clearly define the deadlines for the completion of work.

I am knowledgeable in a wide variety of software programs, including Grafisoft ArchiCAD; Autodesk 3D MAX, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat Pro DC, etc. Fluently speak three languages (Russian, English, French).

Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
In fact, we take risks every day. I take risks with some irony since I believe in fate and everything that happens to me is only a consequence of my thoughts and actions. That is, do not violate the laws of the Universe and all risks will be justified.
