Meet Tatiana Fassieux of California Health Advocates

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tatiana Fassieux.

Tatiana, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have been affiliated with California Health Advocates (CHA) for over 18 years. I have served as Board Chair for 3 separate terms, and now I am in my fourth term. I have been a program manager for the Health Insurance Counseling & Advocacy Program for Passages/Area Agency on Aging in the North State for 18 years, and now I am their part time outreach coordinator. I couldn’t have done the job adequately without the support of CHA.

CHA is primarily staffed by women, and our board of directors has more than 50% women.

Although we do not focus exclusively on the Los Angeles area, we do provide technical support on Medicare, long term care insurance and related topics to anyone who calls us. We do charge for our trainings.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Our principal challenge is funding. Foundations that previously supported us changed their focus.

We are continually seeking donations and grant funds. In addition, finding committed board members who are willing to help with fund development has been a struggle.

Please tell us about California Health Advocates.
As board chair, I lead the organization to ensure our mission is accomplished.

California Health Advocates (CHA), a non-profit organization founded in 1997, is the leading Medicare advocacy and educational voice for Medicare beneficiaries in California. With over 5,644,000 Medicare beneficiaries, California is home to the largest number of adults over 65 and people living with disabilities in America.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
In retrospect, my regret is that I didn’t recognize the tremendous effort that it takes to run a non-profit. Staff did an admirable job in running the organization, and as Board Chair I didn’t have the capabilities to support executive staff.
