Meet CJ Smith of Task Molly in Inland Empire

Today we’d like to introduce you to CJ Smith.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I had a rough childhood growing up. I was primarily raised by my father as my mother was in and out of prison most of my life. I won’t bore you with the details but let’s just say I had experienced way more than a child should ever experience. Instead of using my childhood as a crutch, I used it as fuel.

I graduated high school with honors and went on to get my Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration and then later obtained my Master’s degree as well. I worked full-time and picked up a “side hustle” as a consultant.

While consulting and working, I started helping my dad with his landscaping business. I started handling the invoicing and marketing and also started writing proposals to bid on government contracts. I realized that what I was doing for his business was something that every small business owner probably needed. So many businesses have a viable business but lack the resources needed to be successful. Then came Task Molly.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely has not been a smooth road. A common obstacle for anyone doing anything out of the box or unorthodox is fear. Deciding to push past fear with everything I have is a conscious decision that I make daily. Another personal challenge has been trying to have a “work-life” balance. It’s been nearly impossible and I haven’t actually mastered it yet but it is on my to-do list (lol).

As of late, my challenge has been finding and hiring the right talent. When you open up your business, you become vulnerable. You’re revealing what you feel are “trade secrets” by letting someone in and exposing them to the ins and outs of your business. I know that it is necessary to grow, so I am determined to figure it out.

Please tell us about Task Molly.
Task Molly is a “virtual back office” team that handles day-to-day tasks including but not limited to bookkeeping, social media marketing, and project and program management.

As a company, I am most proud of the quality of service and relationships that we build with each client. All of our clients are recurring and long-time clients, which says something about the quality of our services.

In terms of competitive advantage, I’d definitely say our service and overall customer experience sets us apart from the others. We are responsive, easily accessible, and deliver results 100% of the time.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory is my dad letting me stand on his lap and drive (or at least think I was driving) down the street. He had a black Z300 and I was so small that I could stand up in his lap and just barely see over the steering wheel. It makes me smile every time I think about it.
