Meet Tamesha Scott of Rose & Mary – Herbal Apothecary in Pasadena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamesha Scott.

Tamesha, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
My grandmother passed away in 2009. That was when my life changed. Rosie Lee car was a pillar in the neighborhood. I grew up on the 156th block in Compton in a small house with a huge yard. Granny was known to open the garage and give food out to the neighborhood. She received donations from the church and for the Local families.

She was an avid gardener whose backyard was an oasis; peach, orange and apple trees, pomegranates, lemons apricots, kumquat and the neighbor’s grapevine. She grew green beans, tomatoes and greens as well and everything she put to use.

We didn’t go to the store for jelly or jam, we had granny’s preserves. She used her canned stewed tomatoes for special Rosie recipes… what we ate came from home.

When she passed, I felt I had to continue on building upon her legacy and honoring her life. The first thing I made was strawberry kiwi jam which came out more like candy… but was tasty on the second try, then came the pickles strictly off of memory and I’ve not gotten it quite right.

The next creation was something very random but very ordained and that was where the name rose and Mary came from.

Essentially, I’m in the garden and catch the scent of our roses… wheels start to turn make Rose oil. A few days later, in a walk, I spot wild rosemary. I love the aroma but also understand it’s property… wheels still turning. I mix together this infused sugar scrub which a deep woodsy aroma from the sandalwood and rosemary, and a subtle sensual sweetness from the frankensense myrrh and rose – Rose and Mary. I give a few samples to friends they love the scent but most inspiring was the effect they said it had in them. One noted some swelling went down after use, rosemary is a rubifacient (warming) herb that stimulates blood flow. Someone else noted how well they sleep and how relaxed they were.

All in all, a request came brought to participate in a gifting suite so jumping to it, I’m making up a sweet batch of R&M sugar scrub when in the middle of writing the names Rose & Mary I tear up. It took me a second to realize where the emotions were coming from and when I did the flood gates opened. My mother’s mother is Rosie Lee and my father’s mother is Mary Lou… accidentally on purpose, I created something honoring them both, acknowledging my roots.

I’m the ampersand in Rose & Mary.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
I’m still working things out. Figuring out how exactly I want to live in this creative space and what that space looks like.

Inspiration comes from all areas and I don’t lack for energy yet I find my desire is to share and encourage others to play as well as allow my many areas of expression an outlet.

Maybe, I’m trying to fit into a place that doesn’t exist and it’s time to create it.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Rose & Mary – Herbal Apothecary story. Tell us more about the business.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t think luck is a thing. I think I am doing what I’m supposed to be doing, albeit I could definitely be and more, it’s essentially within me. I believe those moments of inspiration and confirmations of random ruminations can point back to God, my rooting corner of Granny’s and healers in the ancestral realm.
