Meet Tamara Small of Happiness Now in San Diego

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Small.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Tamara. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Throughout my life, I have been on a voyage to become the greatest person I could be. I would meet individuals in midlife who were very insecure or suffering from lifelong hurts and resentments. As a very young adult, I knew I didn’t want to suffer through life. I wanted to live life to the fullest and experience as many things as I could before I died.

I grew up in a dysfunctional home like thousands of people in the US. Due to this, I developed some unhealthy habits and ways of relating to individuals. As a child, I was open to unique or at the time usual things astrology, dream interpretations, and psychics. Something inside of me felt like my life was like an onion, and it was my mission to peel the onion of the negative experiences to get to the person I was meant to be.

As a teenager, I began to peel the onion by reading several self-help books. While other kids were reading Nancy Drew, I was learning about co-dependency and how to build healthy boundaries in my relationships. in 2000, I lost one of my oldest friends, at the age of 23, through a tragic car accident. Losing a friend at such a young age, taught me that we had no guarantees in life regarding how long we were going to live on this earth. This event made me take more chances, live life to the fullest, and not take life for granted.

When I was 23 years old, I went to therapy due to major reactions I was experiencing from Anxiety. This counselor, taught me life skills I never learned from my family and allowed me to improve my life but there were still things he could not help me with even though I made a request.

For the next several years, I tried other therapists to help me solve issues I wanted to face. The tipping point was when I had seen a counselor for six months and she said ” I don’t know what’s wrong”, and couldn’t not provide me help with the original issue I came to see her six months earlier.

Finally, I decided to take an alternative route, hypnotherapy. I thought about trying hypnotherapy for years but I had fears that prevented me from doing so. Now, I wouldn’t let my fears prevent me from getting the help I desired.

After attending six months of hypnotherapy, I couldn’t believe the progress I made. Hypnotherapy, allowed me to get to the heart of the matter and make a permanent change. Knowing what difference this had made in my life, I wanted to help other people make similar changes.

I spoke to my hypnotherapist to gain recommendations about where I could obtain training to become a hypnotherapist. For the next year, I attended training, conferences, and obtained a mentor. Then to make sure I understood the business aspect of entrepreneurship, I attended a course to learn how to build a business which led to me founding Happiness Now.

For years, I have been a career coach in higher education but now I am able to help my clients on a deeper level. I still do career coaching but I am able to help with so much more.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s been an interesting road. Sometimes the universe thinks you should move forward when you may not think you are ready to do so. That happened to me! I hadn’t planned to open my business as soon as I did but some life circumstances happened and the best thing I could do was open my business and move forward with my passion.

Juggling daily life with building a successful business can be challenging. In the end, I make sure I am doing something positive weekly towards my business to continue to allow it to grow.

I find it very positive to listen to Podcasts of individuals both in my industry to learn new tools and techniques and outside my industry who have grown successful businesses. For me building a business is a marathon, not a sprint.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
I grew up in the Midwest and was the youngest of four children. As children, we had little to no supervision and we took advantage of this often. One winter night, my brother, a few of our neighbors, and I took our four-wheeler, tied 3 snow tubes to it and drove it around the neighborhood. It was so much fun riding on the snow tubes. We laughed the entire ride. This may not be my favorite but definitely one of the most memorable.
