Today we’d like to introduce you to Tamara Ellison.
Tamara, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I grew up in the city of Los Angeles and endured the hardship of an economically challenged community. We lived in government housing and was surrounded by hopelessness and despair.
Despite my environment, I knew I wanted more out of life, so I focused on sports to keep me out of trouble. However, at age 16 while training for the Junior Olympics with the aspiration of someday running track for my country in the Olympics. Everything seemed to be on schedule as I successfully pursued my athletic career. Shortly after the season began, I discovered that at the time was thought to be a setback; I was six months pregnant.
Defeating the odds stacked against me, being a teen parent and on the verge of being a high school dropout, I decide to do something different. I came to the conclusion the education and entrepreneurship was the ticket to escape the cycle and determination coupled with perseverance would ensure my arrival to the destination of success. Once I discovered a proven path to success I wanted to equip others to unleash their greatness from within.
I started Tamara Ellison & Co., LLC which offer services such as Life Coaching, Professional Development, Business Coaching, and Consulting. I am the CEO of two other companies WILDRT Construction, Inc. and Empower to Flourish and have become an economic solution in SoCal. Partnering with JobCorp and EDCT Foundation providing employment and on the job experience to underserved communities.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was defiantly a challenge. The hardest obstacles I had to overcome was the stereotypes associated with my race, gender, and economic background. A black woman was not supposed to thrive in the corporate arena let alone be the owner of three companies.
I battled with insecurities such as am I good enough, smart enough, bold enough to get the job done. I did have the model or roadmap to follow. Everyone I knew worked for some else or was receiving assistance from the government. I struggled with the temptation to give up on a daily.
We’d love to hear more about your business.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite childhood memory happened in third grade at Centinela Elementary. I had a 5th-grade boy challenge me to list all of the athletes listed on the wall in the library. I went home to study, and the next day I was able to list all the athletes and their accomplishments.
I did it as a girl I was not supposed to know hockey players or the heavyweight champion of boxing. There was no trophy or prize, but the look of shock that this 3rd grader defeated him was the absolute best. Yep, I am a little competitive.
