Today we’d like to introduce you to Dawnique Chapman.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Dawnique. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I was on my way to work and I prayed to God what is my purpose and please give me a meaningful business idea and that is when Take A Break Respite Care Inc. was born. I have a brother who has autism and I have been providing respite care for over 15 years. I have witnessed my family struggle to navigate the special needs system as well as other special needs families who are their love ones biggest advocate in efforts to obtain necessary resources. I know from experience and I wanted to be of service to help provide families with respite care to help elevate the stress and burdens of caring for a love with special needs. Since starting TAB, I have been overwhelmed by so many families who are in need of my services and I cannot wait to help them all. It’s a labor of love and I am building TAB to be the best of its kind.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
It had not been smooth sailing to say the least but if it was easy everyone would do it. The struggles with building the business has been financial as a single founder and I have such big dreams for TAB that some people are skeptical or non-supportive. I have heard from a few that its a big dream and wonder how are you going to achieve this goal. I keep building with support and the lack thereof because I have already experienced that in life, and I always prove my naysayers wrong. I am determined and persistent despite any challenges. Also, it’s not always building a business with a demanding job but I have made sacrifices to be able to devote more time to building TAB. One of my Fav quotes Anything worth having is worth fighting for. One of my Favorite scriptures are I can do all things through Christ that strengthens me Philippians 4:13.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business Take A Break will provide long and short term care for individuals with disabilities. Take a Break will provide respite care for families and caregivers who care for a special needs or elderly love ones. We will provide a certified caregiver who will go to the home and provide assistance with grooming, preparing meals, medication reminders, light housekeeping, and various engaging fun activities. I am proud that we will provide on call services that will not be limited to a certain amount of hours in a month ( especially for special needs family with regional center services). I know some families just need someone to call if they want to go to a doctors appointment, grocery store run or a quick trip to the nail salon. In the future, my plan is to also provide a center-based facility so families have the option to drop their loved ones off for respite care services as well.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up I am the oldest of 6 siblings which includes 2 brothers and 4 sisters. As a child I was quiet ( sometimes depending on who it is), observant, funny and sweet. I was very independent and creative. I grew up in South Central Los Angeles, CA and later moved to Lakewood, CA. I always had a desire to become successful and not become the norm of my environment. I also grew up in church which helped build my faith as a child that has helped guide my life.
