Meet Sylvia Strem of Stay Adorned

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sylvia Strem.

Sylvia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Where to start? I was in the restaurant and bar industry for about 19 years, after a while the hustle and bustle of that industry started to wear on me. I have always been a creative person. My mom is artistic and so is my grandmother, I guess you could say it runs in the family. With a desire to embrace that creative side, I started thinking about what else I could do with my hands. Cooking has always been one of my passions, but that would mean staying within the food industry, quite honestly I enjoy cooking more for my husband, friends and family than anything else.

What was I passionate about? What drives me? These are all the questions I kept asking myself as I was trying to figure out the next step in my life. I love jewelry and decorating, with my eclectic taste in both, I always found it difficult to find either one of those things that moved me, or suited my taste. My husband asked me one day, “why don’t you just make it?’ That’s when the lightbulb went off!! That’s when Stay Adorned was born.

I started taking jewelry classes and realized I was actually pretty good at this. As I dove more and more into the jewelry aspect, I started utilizing those techniques into home decor. It all really happened organically. I started selling my adornments online and was getting a good response. As time went on I wanted and needed something more, sales were slowing down online, I needed a place where people could see what I did up close and personal, they needed to touch it, to hear the story behind it… I needed a shop!

A friend of mine had told me about this place in San Pedro, called CRAFTED, it’s a warehouse that houses a ton of different artists and is open to the public on the weekends. My husband and I came down one Sunday to check it out and I fell in love with the people and the concept. A space that is for artists to create in and have a permanent retail space within. It was a no-brainer. This was the jumping off point that I needed. I opened the doors to Stay Adorned Boutique at CRAFTED in May of 2017.

Now, a year and a half later, the store has grown into something that I hadn’t really expected or anticipated, in a good way! We are now one of the only shops in the Southbay area that specializes in Macrame. We offer a wide variety of Macrame adornments, dreamcatchers and Macrame workshops. Again, all of this happened organically. I listened to the universe and it guided me in the direction that I need to go.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Is anything ever a smooth road? I struggled with creators block, time management, a loss of drive because I wasn’t sure what I was doing mattered to anyone but me. Creating in our studio by myself and selling online was hard for me. Due to the simple fact of not having any interaction with the people I was creating for. Not being able to see peoples reaction to your hard work and feeling that you are creating a shrine to yourself with all your goodies you make, didn’t do well with my psyche.

I’m a very social person, like most artist in any sort of medium, it’s always nice to have your hard work validated by the reaction of the people you are creating for. Once the boutique opened all of that went away!

Please tell us about Stay Adorned.
Stay Adorned is a collection of eclectic adornments whether it be for you or your home or office. We specialize in leather and wood jewelry, terrariums with butterflies, skulls and taxidermy pieces, and some oddities. We are known for our macrame, dreamcatchers and macrame workshops at the boutique or at your home.

I have always loved the art of macrame, but when I started Stay Adorned, I had no idea, that we would make such a huge shift in making it, let alone teaching it. It has become something I am so passionate about!!

What sets us apart from anyone else, is we don’t only make it, we teach you how to make it. There are very few people these days that do it and definitely fewer people that teach it.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over, honestly, I wouldn’t change a thing. I’m a firm believer that everything happens for a reason. I ended up where I am today because of the process I went through.

If I changed anything that led me here, that may change the outcome entirely. I trusted the process and couldn’t be happier with where it led me. I’m proud of how far I have come as an artist.
