Today we’d like to introduce you to Syd Christopher.
Syd, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I always knew art was going to be a big part of my life. Looking back over the years, some type of project was always on my brain. Some new way I wanted to creatively express myself. It wasn’t until I was in college (Loyola Marymount University, go Lions!) that I realized that being an artist doesn’t actually pay all your bills and I needed to have a game plan. After graduation, I went into business management thinking that was where I was supposed to be. I was good at it so I figured, I’ll just settle with this.
At some point, I knew I was depressed. I was so in my work responsibilities and stresses that I was really neglecting my artistic needs. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean that’s where you are meant to be.
So in a twist I quit and decided it was time to pursue another love of mine: Nails!
I had always loved painting my nails and doing fun little designs (although in the beginning a stripe was my idea of wild) and at some point I worked a nail salon reception desk and had an opportunity to see everything up close. From that point on, I was hooked on doing my own and my friends/ family’s nails for fun.
So to nail school I went. After finishing my hours and getting my license I got a job at a great salon down in Orange County. It was a great place where I felt I was able to push myself as a nail artist and try new and what I considered daring techniques.
Has it been a smooth road?
Anything worth having is going to be a fight. One of my biggest obstacles in my whole life, not just my nail career, has been my age.
Being on the younger side has thrown some bumps in my road so to speak. However I just keep my head up, work hard and I don’t dwell on the negativity in the world.
In the end, I am always putting out good energy and focusing on improving upon my own work everyday.
Please tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I am a nail artist and I specialize in hand drawn art. I do pretty much all forms of nails but I mainly work with Acrylic, Hard Gel, and Apres nail enhancements.
I think what helps me in my industry is the face that I have an art degree. I am painter by trade and now putting images on nails that women thought was not possible is awesome to be able to offer. Never underestimate how good it feels to show your nail tech what you want and you get exactly that!
Bringing art right to your fingertips!
Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love the energy. I love our South Bay vibe, we are such a chill group.
My least favorite thing about where I am is the heat! But that’s okay I stay inside and do nails in the shade.
