Meet Suzanne Landis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzanne Landis.

Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I’m a third-generation photographer, as well as a third-generation Los Angeleno. Yes, a rarity! My grandfather was a businessman, but he was a photographer and filmmaker. And, he even had an active role in starting AFI. My mom, his daughter, was a published travel photographer. You could say I was destined to be a photographer. I specialize in lifestyle, portrait and event photography. I worked for many years in the music business and always photographed on the side. Then when my girls were very little, I saw a fellow mom friend go back to school to become a photographer. I watched her grow her business and decided that it was time for me to turn my passion into a career. I’m so happy I did!

Please tell us about your business.
I capture memories for people that they will have for a lifetime. I’ve always been drawn to people and their stories and I get to tell theirs through the lens of my camera. I often see things that they don’t see in themselves and it’s very rewarding for me to be able to give them a gift like that. My work is incredibly personal and unique to the people that I’m photographing.

Choosing a creative or artistic path comes with many financial challenges. Any advice for those struggling to focus on their artwork due to financial concerns?
I think if you truly love what you do, you will project that energy and bring people into your world that will support your art. And, it’s important to know your worth and not give away your art for free. Because I grew up in Los Angeles, my business is mostly word of mouth, which I’m very grateful for. That being said, the relationships that I create through my work is what sustain my business. So, I would tell other artists to cultivate relationships with people who can spread the word about your business and promote your art.

How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
My work can be seen on my Instagram account @suzannelandisphoto, my Facebook page at Suzanne Landis Photography or my website, suzannelandisphotography.com.
