Meet Suzane Shelden of Make It Official

Today we’d like to introduce you to Suzane Shelden.

Suzane, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am a non-denominational, 5-Star Rated Wedding Officiant, Ceremony and Rehearsal Coordinator, as well as a Notary Public. I’m located in Santa Clarita, CA. I have been blessed to help create and perform wedding ceremonies since 2009. As a Wedding Officiant, I create a wedding ceremony that tells the couples love story, one that reflects the essence of their relationship. It is important to me that their ceremony is exactly how they want it to be, after all, it is their day.

I have discovered that there is a huge need for an experienced, caring Wedding Officiant who can create and perform a wedding ceremony with warmth, professionalism, and love. I have been told that this is “MY CALLING” and I take a lot of pride in creating the perfect ceremony and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I have formed long-lasting relationships with the couples that I have married. The best is watching them grow their family and seeing that I made a difference in their lives.

I am honored to be the one that they have chosen to change there lives forever. My husband who is a Marine Veteran and I have been married for 18 years and together for 23. We have one 15-year-old son together, and I have three stepchildren, now adults. My aunt who has been a part of the wedding & party industry for over 60 years introduced me to this amazing industry. I always knew that I loved planning parties and trying to make the “big day” just perfect. However, I never had the time to devote to being a wedding coordinator. I found my calling in 2009 when I became an ordained Minister. I still remember the first ceremony that I did.

It was super bowl Sunday, and my neighbors decided during halftime to “Make It Official” after being together eight years. My husband was the one who said: “Suzane can marry you, right here and now!” So the bride’s friend ran to Ralphs to get flowers and her soon to be husband made a ring out of tinfoil, and I married them in their living room surround by their closest friends & family. I know it sounds crazy like they weren’t taking it seriously, but I am happy to say that they are still together today and have two beautiful little girls and still live next-door to us.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Every couple is unique, and so is their ceremony. It’s a stressful time for some couples, and a lot of them don’t know where to begin. Sometimes narrowing down what they want can be challenging but at the same time rewarding. I struggle sometimes with advertising ideas.

I do all my own advertising and marketing and coming up with creative ways to reach out to engaged couples or couples looking to renew their vows, can sometimes be a struggle. Because there’s so much competition out there, it’s important to stand out and be different. I absolutely love what I do and don’t mind the occasional challenge.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Make It Official – what should we know?
Every officiant has their own perspective on love, marriage, and weddings, as well as a unique work ethic. It’s important for couples to carefully question prospective officiants about their values and workflow, as well as asking for referrals to rule out those bad actors who exploit weddings and are doing it only for the money and can care less about the couple.

Exceptional wedding experience relies on the officiant being willing to build trust and serve the couples vision and purpose, not their own. I like to put my heart into every ceremony as if it was my own. I prioritize building that trust and rapport with each couple, so we can discover their true wedding vision and make it happen together.

Weddings are more than just a job to me; they are my calling, I have a deep personal commitment to doing this work right, and after ten years creating and conducting hundreds of ceremonies, I offer a wide range of experience and knowledge about what it’s like to get married, unique ideas to personalize each ceremony and to stay married. After all, I have been married over 18 years and counting.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
I have to give credit to my God, family, friends, and friendors who constantly support me and my business. I am thankful for the couples who chose me to officiate their weddings and who have allowed me to change their lives forever.
