Meet Susan Isaac and Sid Jain of Su & Sid in Hollywood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Susan Isaac and Sid Jain.

Susan and Sid, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Su & Sid started off as a stand in stage name for two musicians trying to find the right way to express themselves, which resulted in the birth of a sound we couldn’t let go of, so the name stuck too. It fits because we’re just two regular people, sharing their stories as simply as possible.
Personally, the music is a release, a journey of freedom and self-exploration. It is a little bit of indulgent escapism, and we have a feeling that we’re not the only ones in need of it.

The two of us met as most musicians do; the music scene, and have been playing together and releasing music ever since. Our musical backgrounds are different but similar, being from opposite ends of the ever flavourful India. We both had a composite exposure to various genres like RnB/Soul, Jazz, rock, hip-hop (for Su) or Metal, Jazz, Classical, Latin jazz, and RnB (for Sid). We just released our debut single ‘Astray’ independently and plan to release an E.P. by late October. We see our music constantly evolving and we don’t really have a say in how it goes, but we’re super excited to see where it ends up.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Don’t get us wrong, being performing artists in the City of Stars is as gratifying as it sounds but it also definitely has its complications. Apart from the infamous hustle-all-day lifestyle, the main challenge for us is that we live so far away from our families and homes that it sometimes makes it hard to focus but also lets us be completely immersed in our work.

Musically, it has been a challenge to present our recorded music live as a duo since we use a layered style of composing, but we plan on expanding our band, adding more instruments for future albums and shows. Besides that, we’re still getting used to our friends and fans listening to our music and getting a clear view into our souls, our deepest fears and desires, but it is known that vulnerability is an artist’s best friend, so we’re learning to use it.

Please tell us about Su & Sid.
Su & Sid is an Indian Neo-Soul duo in Los Angeles that was formed in early 2018. Our music is a modern, hypnotic take on the classic genres of Soul, RnB, Jazz, and Classical (Indian and Western). Our defining sound comes from our wide range of influences; from Sade to John Scofield, or Lianne La Havas to Hiatus Kaiyote, with the local styles of where we hail from. The fact that this combination of genres hasn’t come out of our corner of the world in this way before gives us a kind of edge.

We’re most proud of our authenticity, we try not to ‘sell air’. Our main objective is to produce honest music that reaches people on a deeper level. We hope that it provides to our listeners a safe space where you can be anybody, feel anything, exist anyhow; A mental retreat. We pack our songs with as much heart and our own dreams as we can which makes our live shows an immersive and intimate experience, and we leave feeling connected to our audiences.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We have been extremely lucky to have had devoted and inspiring mentors that nudged us along when we wavered in and out of drive and self-doubt. Both of us have established life-long connections with older, veteran musicians that took us under their wing to teach us the language and explain the personal and social responsibilities of a musician.
Our families of course deserve big props for their support and protective guidance and in a way everything we do is for them.

Our friends, other musicians and new fans have been incredibly supportive, sharing our work religiously and traveling distances to attend our shows and getting to know us! Which makes every struggle totally worth it.
