Meet Kat Kontis of Sugar Bouffant in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kat Kontis.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Kat. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Picture a small girl with long brown hair, dressed in bouffant dresses, happily dreaming of fanciful sugar treats, spun candy and rainbow colors… That was not me…

Picture another girl, in a different neighborhood. This little girl was in her third foster home. She too had long brown hair, but it was uncombed, tangled and her bangs covered her eyebrows. Her dresses were hand-me-downs and never matched. She stopped talking at the age of three – no one listened anyway – she became electively mute for a year. She didn’t dream… she survived.

At age 7, I was adopted by my social worker. She loved me from the first day I came into the foster care system at the age of 2. When you are a foster kid for five years, it changes who you are. Even when you are finally safe, totally loved, with evenly cut bangs wearing bouffant dresses, and eating sugar-spun treats, something tells you deep down inside, you can’t dream… you’re still not good enough.

It takes a while. It takes hard work. It takes hard lessons. It took in my case, being a single Mom to a precious son who deserved a WHOLE Mom.

In developing my wholeness for him, I found my dreams. They come from pushed- down hopes-they came because of my son and family. Now, I’m surrounded everyday buy sugar spun sweetness. Each cone I sell gives a portion back to foster kids. Every colorful, sugary bouffant cone I make reminds me of me.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Let’s just say, I’ve thrived at the low points. I have been googling my way through the business world since I first had the itch to create something of my own.

The scariest part is always the first part! I had been nervous for a whole year, until I marched myself to the business office, and was stunned that besides seeing my plan, the city just wanted my money. It was that easy!

Never share your next move, this is what sets my creative self apart from others. I’m an innovative leader, by leading in the industry – you never fear competition. Challenges? What’s that? Bring it on!

Please tell us about Sugar Bouffant.
Word on the street is your throwing a pretty sweet event! Wanna make it even sweeter? You’ve come to the right cotton candy cart!

We are also vegan, gluten-free and dye free – great for all beings! We have a total of eight flavors which include: Caramel Coif, Poppin Pompadour (watermelon with pop rocks), FineApple, CocoTopKnot, Peppermint Pinup, Banana Blowout, Mango Fro, and Bubblegum Beehive.

Sugar Bouffant is many things… Always your friend first (If you’ve hired me, you know I immediately want to be besties. Or we can be the vendor that takes direction well and knows our place). Always responsive in a timely manner. First one, first serve.

No person is more important than the other. Consistent with our pricing. The grandeur ness of your event does not affect your pricing. Equality for all! Always on time. Lastly, I relish in making every party so memorable and special for each of my guests.

“Under Promise, Over Deliver” – this is my business motto. I have always survived on being vulnerable and honest. Although I’m not on Forbes, I’ve found it necessary to be transparent. You don’t have to be a celebrity to share your struggles. Most importantly, be kind. Always.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Absolutely nothing! My last interview was at a high-end restaurant. I had memorized a slew of unnecessary recipes, hundreds of drink recipes, and was practically a sommelier by the time I interviewed. The interview came, and I froze up – and cried in fear on the spot (so ridiculous) clearly I was shut down for being incompetent.

I was overqualified, and in fact, was going backwards in my career for fast cash tips (Don’t do that!) On that resume, I had written that one of my life goals, was to become a street vendor. Had I not been rejected, I would have never had the courage to start Sugar Bouffant. Rising over rejection, always wins. It’s a feeling that can’t be bought – priceless.
