Meet Steven Nguyen

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Nguyen.

Hi Steven, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started photography as a hobby in 2016. I was just a college boy who was curious about cameras. One day I volunteered to help print photos for weddings in Virginia. That day changed my life, I found my passion in that wedding. It was an unforgettable experience, I love the wedding environment, I love how people laugh and cry but I can see the happiness on their faces.

That was how I decided to invest in my first professional camera. In 2017, I moved to California, with a passion of photography, I joined and worked for some wedding studios in Orange County and experienced over 50 weddings in two years. Studying and attending in countless workshops, til the end of 2019, I decided to go on my own. Like everyone, COVID-19 hit us hard in 2020. My business was completely stopped after three months of opening. I was struggling for a long time without any wedding coming in until Mid of 2021, everything starts to get back on track gradually. I was able to complete 35 weddings in 2021.

My photography style is influenced by a film with a touch of light and airy style. My goal is not to keep priceless moments of my client’s wedding through my camera, but also to bring to an unforgettable experience beyond that. To some of the couple, I might not be only their photographer, but also a friend or a planner who guide them in every step to have a successful wedding.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has never been a smooth road. When I started, I had nothing, no equipment, and no money to invest. My first 10 weddings I rented all equipment to do it, and then start to save and buy one by one. Of course, wedding is not easy, I made mistakes like everyone else, but I was lucky that I did not have big mistakes that I could not fix it. Every wedding I learned a different lesson, but because of that, I am who I am today.

The biggest struggle in my career is COVID-19. I would say it hit me hard because 2020 was my first year of full-time photography. My business was last long for three months and everything was shut down.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a wedding photographer! I am known as fine art light and airy photographer who specializes in natural light photography. My photography is influenced by film color. It brings the photo come to life with bright lighting, colorful, soft and romantic look.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I would say “No pain no gain”. No one can be successful without any risk taking and failure. My biggest risk I have ever made was borrowing money to invest my photography equipment. That time, I did not even know if I were talented or not. I had a passion with no client and no experience. It took me four years learning and investing, I wasted my money by investing into the wrong equipment and switching back and forth. However, I would say I am on the way to being successful in my career.
