Meet Steven Almond of Brick Top Blaggers in Orange County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Steven Almond.

Steven, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
We are a Celtic Rock/Punk band out of Orange County, we formed at the end of 2009 when our founder Greg Mintz who was going to school at UC Irvine reached out on Craigslist to start an Irish band as a hobby, we came together quickly and after a little tweaking the band had seven founding members.

We started as more of a traditional rock Irish band with guitar, bass, drums, fiddle, mandolin, accordion and vocals. We started to perform at pubs and venues around Orange, LA and San Diego counties and quickly gained a following. As the years passed, Greg graduated and continued his studies abroad, our fiddle player started a family and members came and went. Now years on and the band has grown as new members joined and the sound has changed with them.

We are now in our eighth year and myself (Steven Almond, vocals) and Dustin Lindberg (bass) are the only original members, we are a five-piece at the moment with Kevin Ousley on drums, Daniel Murillo on guitar and Karin Dell on fiddle. The sound now is more of a Celtic hard rock /punk with two albums and a new six-song EP which released last year, you can hear the progression of the band on these records. We have enjoyed some great shows over the years and with big shows like Get Shamrocked in Murrieta and Freemont Street in Las Vegas coming in Sept we hope to keep bringing great Celtic music to the fans.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Never smooth as bands are concerned, 🙂 life always gets in the way. Including the current line up, we have had 19 members over the years, mostly jobs and family commitments.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
Celtic/Irish rock band. Known for our energy and mix of traditional songs with rock.

Proud to have kept the band moving forward and playing with some great bands in our genre on some big stages. What sets us apart is our sound and a different approach to writing songs in our genre.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was a shy lad, I grew up in a small town just outside of Brighton on the south coast of England.

Like all English boys, growing up consisted of playing football and going down the pub on weekends. My interests have always been music and football. I moved to California in 1994 and that is where I found my love for singing and I got together with friends and started a punk band in the late 90’s. That helped me get over my shyness real quick. 🙂
