Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephen Kogon.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I moved to Los Angeles from Maryland over 15 years ago to work in the entertainment industry. After years of mainly just being a writer, I started my production company and began the process of making my first film — in which I would write the script, and produce, direct and act. The film was called DANCE BABY DANCE and is about an underdog tap dancer who goes after his lifelong dream against great odds. I also tap danced in the film, something I’d never done before in my life. I had to teach myself how for the film.
The movie was released on 1/19/18 with a week-long theatrical screening at Arena CineLounge in Hollywood. Now, we’ll be doing shown in other select theaters around the SoCal area before expanding to more theaters around the country. It is also available on Amazon: http://bit.ly/DBD_on_Amazon (free if you have Prime!).
Soon, it’ll be available on other VOD platforms as well as DVD.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The process of making the film took was definitely not a smooth road — and it took about 4 years from beginning to end. I’ve actually written book about what it was like called “How I made the movie DANCE BABY DANCE (while being a 1st-time Director, Actor and Producer)”.
I basically had to overcome a huge budget mishap and other obstacles along the way to getting it made. But even though it was difficult, it was also very rewarding and I’m proud of the film. And being a 1st-timer meant there was quite a bit of learning on the job.
Wings of Hope Productions – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Wings of Hope Productions is new, with our first project being DANCE BABY DANCE. I expect it to be a consistent deliverer of good content for many years to come, mainly focusing for now on feature films and books, which will be adapted into films.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Making my first film. Despite whatever else I do career-wise, I think this project will always have the highest degree of difficulty. The low budget, the unnecessary mishaps, and being a first-timer contributed to that. And so, I’m very proud that I stayed the course and found a way to finish it (and be proud of the final product).
