Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephy Perea.
Stephy, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I was that little girl who loved to draw on the walls of the hallway of my parents’ home, lol.
Of course, being in a Latino family, my mom got mad at me Latino style, then my sister gave me washable crayons and that didn’t help my mom/s situation at all, LOL.
As I grew up, I always had a thing for color, design and the art of creating. I was that one nerdy gal who would take pictures on field trips since elementary school. At the age of ten, I was gifted my first digital camera by my parents. It was a cheesy 2-megapixel camera but I didn’t care. Fast-forwarding to teenage Stephy, I was placed in an art academy in high school and there, I expanded my knowledge with art and discovered graphic design. In the process of applying to College, my parents always wanted me to apply and aim for other majors besides art. They felt that art was just a hobby. I then lived for two years out in Chihuahua, Mexico for a design internship and coming back, I came even more motivated to pursue my career in Design and Photography.
I always had a love and passion for photography especially because it allowed me to create and experience unique moments with people and capture it permanently in an image.
Coming back from Mexico, I went straight back to school to get my BFA in Graphic Design and Commercial Photography in which I finished two bachelor’s degrees in three years (crazy right?).
With my background in design, it helped shape my strong eye for detail. During Photo school, my professor Trever Hoehne helped me discover that I can collide my two loves and passions into one which is Fashion and Photography. He helped me see photography in a different way and give it more purpose and of course have fun! I have always nerded out with the fashion and entertainment industry.
I’m thankful for what I currently do because thanks to my talents and passion, it has allowed me to travel the world such as Paris, France and Mexico City. I’m excited what the future holds as I keep fighting for it, but so far, it’s quite a ride 🙂
Has it been a smooth road?
My struggles were quite a few. It took a lot of trial of error of doing things. My parents at first didn’t believe that I could make a career/living out of art, so when signing up for college I secretly changed my major from Business to Design and Photography. They were apalled but because they loved me so much they had to support me but with fear of me “losing my time,” However I started winning awards against other art school students and getting published in fashion magazines for the first time (while being an art student) and they saw the results and and began to be more proud of me and supported me 100%… I had to follow my passion for creating. My parents are super awesome but they wanted the best for me and seeing the results of what I was creating and how it created opportunities for the future, they realized it was meant to be. And honestly, they are my #1 cheerleaders in everything I do now LOL.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My Company is StephyPerea.
Stephany is my full name but, my brand is my childhood nickname Stephy. No specific reason why my branding is StephyPerea, however literally everyone calls me Stephy and it has stuck with me ever since.
I specialize in fashion and advertising photography.
As well as art direction, I have a strong eye for clean details and speak to a wide audience. Influenced through my playful spirited character, I enjoy creating stories with an artistic approach.
I love to produce images to clients that say something unique and create an experience. I am most proud of creating images with different clients around the world allowing me to travel and the friendships that I make internationally. I met some of my best friends in college thanks to photo projects and created a magazine about them! (that is quite a funny story I will always have with me)
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I totally recommend Los Angeles because I might be biased here because it is a city that I love since I am a southern Californian girl. However, Los Angeles has always been a city that I love due to the colors, culture and the people are very unique here. One will never get bored of LA. However, if one wants to be here and start a business, it is possible but one needs to fight for their vision and their future to make it happen and keep walking forward.
