Meet Stephanie Salinas of Family Rich in La Puente

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Salinas.

Stephanie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I worked in post-production for television and film, for 15 years. Throughout that time I had the blessing of being able to travel the world, where I was constantly inspired by different cultures and ways of life that were far different than my own. I would come home from those experiences feeling fortunate to have the career and lifestyle I had, but I was also mildly ashamed that I was devoting so much of my life to a career that left me feeling empty inside. While traveling to third-world countries, I took notice of the lack of technology, running water, electricity and food, but what I did notice was an abundance of unity and love. I met many families who would be considered poor, but they are in fact richer than I was at the time. They are Family Rich.

I approached my best friend and mentioned the idea of placing the words Family Rich on a tee, to see what would happen. I had never been in the apparel business or any business other than entertainment at that point, and I had never had any entrepreneurial experience either. However, I knew the concept, “Family Rich,’ and the premise of “Together We Have It All,’ was something that many can relate to. I trademarked the name, I moved forward with a logo, I formed an LLC, and the rest is history. We have sold thousands of products, and have shipped worldwide – blessed to say that our products have touched every continent (a proud moment for a world traveler). We donate proceeds from each purchase through our foundation Family Rich Gives Back, and we make efforts to stress the importance of family and friends through our social media platforms.

I left my career this past year to focus on the brand full time. I have been blessed with the support of my family, friends, and girlfriend, as I grow along this journey of owning a business. Leaving my career was difficult – almost like I had to leave an old life behind. I went through a period of fear, of doubt, of second-guessing, but I made it out to the other side. The trick is to never quit on your dreams. Remain focused on the bigger picture, remain focussed on the success your business has had up to this point, and remember, none of it would be if it weren’t for you. The pressure is immense, but so are the rewards.

My ultimate goal is to be a philanthropist, where I can significantly give back to those who inspired me, in the name of Family Rich. Until then, we will continue to expand our product line, we will continue to market our brand, in effort to reach more people, and we will consistently stress the importance of family and friends, in an effort to make a positive impact on the world.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road. I was very green when I started and made a few expensive errors. There was also a time early on where I had to put the brand on a 6 month time out to really assess if I wanted to do it or not. An ambitious feat like this can be very time consuming and requires plenty of attention, which at times was nearly impossible while also working a full-time job.

I had to also learn to curb my emotional reaction to everything requiring my business. You really can’t take too many things personal. Manufacturers will make your products wrong, certain people will not support your brand, people will hate. I had to learn to let all of it go, because after all, with any and every problem that could arise, the dream is still alive and well.

Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Family Rich – what should we know?
My brand is called Family Rich. We are based in Los Angeles and the Big Island of Hawaii. We represent being rich in love with family and friends, with everything else being extra. We sell apparel for men, women, youth, toddlers and infants, as well as home goods and accessories. We also identify ourselves as a movement, where we are not just selling a product, but we make an effort to consistently remind the world of the value of the human connection. I am most proud of the impact we have had in the lives of our supporters. I have been told on multiple occasions that individuals were inspired to make major lifestyle changes in order to spend more time with their families, or they decided to put differences aside and move forward united.

What sets us apart is our apparel allows people to wear what they feel. They ARE Family Rich. They live the brand, they teach their offspring about the brand, they promote the brand when people ask about it, their newborn is photographed wearing our onesie, and there was even an instance where one of our biggest supporters wore our tee as she passed away. Family Rich is in the hearts of many, and they love to display that pride as often as possible.

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
Persistence has been the most important to my success. One motto I live by is, “Dream, Plan, Execute.” Once my mind is set on something, I will accomplish it. I may not be the best at it, it may not be the quickest journey, I may fall flat on my face a few times in front of everybody, but I will not fail.
