Meet Stephanie Pecina

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie Pecina.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Stephanie. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
Recess! It all started back at recess during my elementary school years, where I would run to the easel, pick up a paintbrush, and eagerly start painting. I remember going on a school field trip to an artist’s studio and feeling absolute joy, curiosity, and a sense of belonging. Even at that age, it was an unforgettable experience that has stuck with me to this day.

My skips to the easel at school were followed by my runs home after school to throw on my favorite cartoons. To be honest, painting and cartoons were my escape from the harsh reality of my parent’s divorce. It was a way for me to add some color back into my very bleak and scary world. At this point, my love and need for art only grew. I knew it would always play a very important role in my life. Now, let’s fast forward about 12 years.

After switching my college major from Psychology to Animation, I knew I was back where I belonged. I accepted an internship at Nickelodeon Animation Studio and have been a full-time employee there for the past six years. Working in Production has allowed me to focus in on my own artistic endeavors outside of the office. I was painting a ton but wanted to do more with my art.

With this in mind, I decided to purchase a sewing machine and started to experiment. I felt like it would be fun to turn my paintings into something useable and fashionable to share with my friends. After a bunch of attempts, I finally found a design of something I loved. Ever since then, creating one-of-a-kind, hand-painted wallets & clutches has been my jam!

Has it been a smooth road?
It’s been pretty challenging, to say the least. Creating is my passion, and finding time outside of work for my art can be very, very hectic at times. I’m at the office M-F during the day and then go home to work on my personal projects for the rest of the night. It can be tiring, but worth it every single time when I can step back and look at a finished piece that I’m proud of.

We’d love to hear more about what you do.
I make, sell, and ship handmade one-of-a-kind (and super colorful) paintings, wallets, and earrings. I do this all myself, and I’m really proud of that fact- painting, cutting, sewing, packaging, promoting, every part of it! I feel like I am most known for creating vibrant, bright, and cheery pieces that shine with a unique personality and hopefully make people smile.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and the least?
I love L.A.! I really do. I was born and raised in Echo Park and Eagle Rock and still live in the area now, so this is home for me. I’m comfortable here and feel free to express myself in a place that constantly inspires me.

I love how much diversity and art (and sunlight!) there is in this city. There is amazing work being shared everywhere- large galleries, DIY spaces, and everything in between. Then there’s the cost of living and traffic… Ouch!
