Today we’d like to introduce you to Stephanie G-M.
So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
Where to start! Haha! I’ve grown up in lots of different countries mostly Europe and moved to LA three years ago. I had lived in the UK for 17 years, where I went to Art College and majored in Sculpture and retrained as a makeup artist around 13 years ago. When my husband and I knew we were going to have a baby, we made the choice to raise him somewhere we could both work and have an outdoor lifestyle, LA was the perfect fit for that.
My son is now three and a half years old, I had started working on an idea for a business before we got pregnant but when the pregnancy started it was a sure fire way to push the process along and give it a deadline, so Ouli’s Ointment and my son were both born in 2015 in London!
Ouli’s Ointment is an all-purpose balm that is truly great for everything. It was inspired by my Grandmother (Yiayia) and her use of chamomile for ailments, my need for a natural, non-greasy version of the balm I used for everything in my makeup kit, and our family olive groves on the island my family is from in Zakynthos, Greece. Ouli’s is as global as us!
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I feel like having a baby, starting a business of any sort and moving internationally is never really a smooth road!! Haha!! A lot of people asked me if I was crazy doing it all at once, including my husband!
I started the business in London because I had years of connections in the industry and if I waited until after our son was born there would have been a lot more limitation (I know this now!) I think it helps that I started a business in the industry I know so well.
One of the biggest challenges was having a business in the UK and here as well as taking time to start my makeup career all over again in a new city and with a new priority being a family.
I can’t imagine doing it any other way, with success comes challenge and I appreciate they come hand in hand. It took us a good two and a half years to get fully settled.
Ouli’s Ointment – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
My nickname growing up was Stephanouli so the name Ouli is something my father calls me so that is where I got the name from. Ouli’s Ointment is very much an extension of me, it’s a very simple and adaptable product which works very much the way I work as a green makeup artist. I am known as a makeup artist for creating beautiful skin and I truly feel and have had feedback from lots of customers who say it does exactly that.
Ouli’s is gentle enough for babies, as it has only four simple ingredients which are organic olive oil, organic beeswax, organic roman chamomile, and tocopherol (non-gmo sunflower derived) we have used it on our son since birth. It’s also great for men as a moisturizer or beard balm and can be used to create a glowy finish under makeup or as a highlighter or lip balm. I use it everyday as my moisturizer.
What I’m most proud of is that this little tin really surprises people, they can’t believe how it is olive oil based and not greasy! I’m also extremely proud of how I have managed to reduce waste with packaging; our tins are made from aluminum, one of the most recyclable materials out there and we have no outer packaging. As a makeup artist, I have thrown a lot of packaging and product away and it always hurt when I have to do that so I consciously made the decision to fit all the necessary info onto this little tin.
I also wanted my brand to have purpose outside of doing our part for the environment so we are involved with a local nonprofit called ROSIES Foundation which creates opportunities for people with disabilities to harness their abilities and skills through workplace training. 10% of our sales go to ROSIES Foundation and I also offer opportunities for the ROSIEScrew to work with Ouli’s.
I feel like all this sets us apart, one little tin doing a lot!
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
One word… motherhood. My proudest moment is knowing that I am raising a human with awareness and consciousness to care for our earth and humanity. My son is always teaching me something about myself and how I can improve the way I do things. If it weren’t for him, I don’t know how I would learn! He motivates me and gives me a different perspective on life constantly. Those are skills that I apply everyday in the business.
