Meet Star Garcia of Starbakes in Ventura County

Today we’d like to introduce you to Star Garcia.

Star, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
Ever since I can remember baking has always played a huge role in my life. I grew up spending as much time as possible with my Nana in the kitchen baking anything I could get my little hands on. As time went on baking became my responsibility and I was the only one allowed to make desserts for the family events. In 2015 I decided to quit my full-time job to return to school and needed something to keep my creatively busy. I stumbled across a sugar cookie decorating YouTube video and I instantly became obsessed with watching them. I grew up decorating simple sugar cookies for Christmas but never thought to make them for any other events. A couple days later (after watching hours of YouTube cookie videos) I decided to give it a shot. Let me be the first to say, it was NOTHING like the YouTube videos I watched. I had icing running all over, my kitchen was a disaster and I felt completely defeated. After taking a break for a couple weeks, I decided to give it another go and to my surprise it wasn’t half bad, aside from the fact that it took me 4 hours to decorate 12 cookies. I kept at it and before I knew it I had family and friends asking me to make cookies for their parties. After a couple of months and more demand from family, friends and my friends’ friends, I decided to create Starbakes. With the love and support of my family and friends Starbakes has become my full-time business.

Has it been a smooth road?
Running your own business is a never-ending adventure, full of challenges and I would be lying if I said I’ve never thought about quitting. It is scary starting a brand-new business and when I first started Starbakes I lacked the confidence in my “product” and constantly compared myself to others. With time, practice and many sleepless nights my skills advanced and my confidence grew. As much as I hate to say it, I appreciate all the obstacles I’ve encountered because they are all lessons I’ll never forget. Of course there are things I look back on and think “I should have done this or that differently” but my past decisions ultimately have landed me where I am at today and I couldn’t be more proud.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I specialize in custom decorated sugar cookies, anything from birthdays, baby showers, weddings to even divorce cookies! I would say I am know for “cookies that are almost too beautiful to eat” as many of my clients have claimed – which is so incredibly sweet, but that’s what I make them for (so you can eat them)! I am most proud of how far I have come, considering I do not have any professional experience and the confidence I have gained along the way. The icing on top would have to be all the amazing collabs and features I have been fortunate enough to participate in.
