Meet Stacy Lemus of Blends Beat Showcase

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacy Lemus.

Stacy, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Well… I started my path on accident. I was attending CSUDH majoring in Mass Media Communications when one day Ski Beatz reached out to me on Twitter and said he wanted to bring Maschine Experience to LA (he was currently hosting this Beat battle in NY). Of course, without hesitation & no experience at the time, I agreed to help; this happened May 2013 if I’m not mistaken.

After the phone call I reached out to everyone I knew that worked in entertainment; my graphic designer Keese Goood, my first LA mentor Bryan Sallis who then introduced me to Chuck Dizzle & DJ Hed of Homegrown Radio, also Willie B. These people were the start of helping me build my empire. From them I went on to meet my 2nd mentor who taught me everything about marketing Monet “Bangloose” Jackson; I was also his assistant.

While being mentored by Sallis & Bang, I managed to get Willie B an interview for Vibe Magazine with Cory Towns (I was about three months in at this pony). I then interned as an assistant (I guess) & helping with marketing ideas to Anthony “Moosa” Tiffth II & Derrick “mixed by Ali) Ali for a side company they had going. I would have to thank Willie B for co-signing for me to get my foot in the door with TDE.

After working with them, I then got the ball rolling and had my very first BLENDS Beat Showcase January 24, 2014; Grammy Weekend in LA. My first BLENDS was amazing I had Grammy Nominated producers on my line up & everyone came out and showed love. I even cried that night cause I was so happy. Mind you I put together & promoted the first BLENDS in a span of only two weeks.

After the first one, I had them monthly then switched to twice a year cause it hit expensive & I pay for everything out of my own pocket. Finally, in May 2014 Ski Beatz, Native Instruments, & myself held the first Maschine Experience Beat Battle in LA, and it was such a dope Experience. Till this day Ski Beatz is still a believer & supporter. Everyone who I met in the beginning still truly believes in my movement.

From day one, I’ve only built genuine relationships with people. Things don’t flow right if it’s forced or only being used. I give every producer that’s touched my stage the same advice & I get to watch them flourish.

Has it been a smooth road?
Man, BLENDS had definitely been a roller coaster. I dropped out of school to pursue music & I haven’t looked back since. I think the biggest struggle was telling my family my career choice and getting them to actually come out & see what I do.

Other struggles include having nervous breakdowns and crying cause last-minute venue changes, headlining producers not showing up without warning, going over budget, being sexually harassed… but through all the struggles I find happiness knowing I built this on my own & I’m giving most of these producers their first stage.

I get to watch them grow & am now a part of their story, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
BLENDS Beat Showcase is a music producer showcase & every once in a while we include a performing artist. We give most producers/artist their first stage. We become a part of their music journey & provide guidance.

Even if you’re some type of creative who’s not performing or involved and show up to BLENDS, you are bound to leave with someone’s contact. Everyone who shows up is somebody (A&R, blogger, podcast, etc.). I always tell people you never know who will show up; I’ve had the A&R of Aftermath show up, A&R of TI$A Records show up, VP of iStandard, etc. You just never know.

My proudest moment is when one of our talents lands a placement off someone they met at the event or someone I introduced them to. It’s happening right now & it brings me so much joy to watch them grow into the next level.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
LA is a great place to start. I tell everyone who’s new here that whoever you meet that working in this industry they are only one person away from knowing someone who can change your entire life. Sometimes it’s not what you know, but who you know.
