Meet Stacie Buhler and Richie Jacobson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stacie Buhler and Richie Jacobson.

Stacie and Richie, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Richie and I were married in 2014 in Salt Lake City, Utah. Shortly after, we went to teach English in China for seven months and I bought my first DSLR camera. I was obsessed with taking photos and making videos of our travels. When we got back to Utah, I decided I would start a wedding photography business. I hired a business coach and got to work. After a year of running a successful wedding photography business, I was starting to lose my passion. All of my personal work was focused on fashion, so my business coach suggested heading that route. I bought a ticket the next day to Paris for fashion week. I snuck into shows, made contacts, and learned the ins and outs.

As my work progressed, I realized if I really wanted to pursue fashion photography we needed to be in LA or NYC. We sold our home, all of our possessions, and moved to Manhattan. Richie had just quit his job in Utah and had expressed interest in photography. He was already producing and working on most of my editorial shoots. We decided that we would make it work with both of us pursuing photography full time. I mentored Richie and quickly he had learned more about working my camera than I did. He taught me how to shoot on film, and we both had now found a passion for photography.

After two years in New York, we had the itch to try out the west coast. We again sold all of our belongings and headed back across the country. Richie and I started to blend our photography business’ because we saw strengths in one another that we didn’t see in ourselves. We now work together and we have over 50 editorials published internationally, clients such as Savage x Fenty, Gucci, Miu Miu, IMG models, LA Models, Kate Spade, and L’Officiel to tame a few. Together we take on fashion weeks shooting runway and street style for magazines. It’s been a lot of hard work, and we will continue to move forward with our work/career one step at a time.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It hasn’t been a smooth road. We’ve had shoots go wrong, worked with dishonest people, and have had to have a lot of courage to face our fears. We grew up with no connections in a small town and New York was a tough beast to slay, but we did it. My piece of advice for anyone doing a creative career is to do what you’re afraid of doing, face your fears head-on and don’t give up when you’re down about your work. That’s the only way to move forward.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
We are a photography duo based out of Los Angeles, California. We provide fashion, commercial, and portrait photography and video. We primarily shoot on small and medium format film (digital when requested) and shoot 8mm and digital video. With us, you get two photographers for the price of one. We include wardrobe styling, set design, lighting, studio/location, and retouching services. We produce individual, bold, and timeless images and films. Our work is inspired by characters of ingenuity, the film industry, and storytelling. We create unique photos with the intent to tell your original story.

Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
Both Richie and I would say that we really look up to one another. Together we have supported, encouraged, and uplifted one another in our work.

Another person who has made a huge impact is my business coach at the beginning, D’Arcy Benincosa. She is a powerhouse of a businesswoman and photographer. Without her support and encouragement, we might just not have believed in ourselves and made the scary move to NYC.
