Meet Roxanne Golkar and Bradley Reitler of The Source better known as Meet The Source

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxanne Golkar and Bradley Reitler.

Please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Some people don’t know this but we actually started off as an almond milk company, Rawmond Milk. As we made more and more almond milk, we had more and more almond pulp that we didn’t know what to do with. We messed around with so many recipes but as a lot of people know, the pulp has a weird, for lack of better word, consistency.

We eventually decided to use it to make one of our favorite cakes, carrot cake. We didn’t want to bake the cake so we decided to make it a raw carrot cake… and here we are. The cake was such a big hit that we started making more and more raw cakes and desserts.

Social media really helped us to get our name out into the community and we are so grateful for all the love and support we get every day. We honestly can’t wait to see what the future holds for us and our small company.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has most definitely been far from a smooth road. This has been one of the hardest things either of us have ever done and there were days that we thought we couldn’t keep going on with it.

We can actually tell you a pretty funny story (which was not funny at the time) that we don’t think either of us will ever forget. Early on, when we were still only making almond milk, we had a particularly miserable experience. We had fallen behind that day and had 100+ bottles of milk to make for our farmers market the next morning. We got to the kitchen we were working out of at around midnight and as we were bringing some of our supplies inside, one of our 3-gallon jars of honey rolled out of the trunk of our car in slow motion and smashed onto the hard asphalt.

I (Bradley) will never forget my heart sinking into the pit of my stomach as I watched the glass walls of the jar of honey slowly pull apart in the dark parking lot. I frantically ran inside the kitchen to get trash bags and without thinking, put my bare hands on the broken jar, lifting it into the trash bag without getting any honey on the ground, or cutting my hands. To this day, I will never know why I didn’t just pack everything right back up then and there and drive home.

Owning a small business is no easy task and you have to be ready for anything and everything but it has also been one of the most rewarding things we have ever done. We get to work for ourselves, have the best team, and have had the privilege to meet so many amazing people along the way.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into The Source better known as Meet The Source story. Tell us more about the business.
We are a raw, plant-based, refined sugar-free dessert company based out of Westside Costa Mesa in Orange County. We specialize in raw cakes and bliss balls in a variety of different flavors, but also make things like raw brownies and raw pop tarts; whatever dessert option you want, we can probably make the raw version of.

For those of you who aren’t familiar with raw desserts, they are made using different nuts, seeds, dried and/ or fresh fruits, etc. We basically make you healthy desserts that you don’t have to feel guilty about eating because they are actually good for you (yes, you read that right, our cakes are actually good for you and you can eat a slice for breakfast).

We are most proud of the fact that we have stuck to our values and make products that we would personally feel good about feeding ourselves and our families. Our desserts leave you feeling satisfied and actually taste really good. We know people can be skeptical of healthy dessert options and when we get those customers that nervously buy one thing, and then come running back for more, we know we are doing something right.

How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
We think this industry is on the rise. Our hope is that people continue to choose healthier options and try to stay away from refined sugars. We are continuously surprised when we see new products from “health conscious” companies that contain cane sugar.

We hope that this is something that will slowly be pushed out by consumer demand. We know some people argue that sugar is sugar, and we agree to an extent, but there will always be a huge difference between eating a couple dates and eating a conventional chocolate bar…
