Today we’d like to introduce you to Sophia Woode.
Sophia, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Name is Sophia pronounced SooFire, the Ghanaian way of saying my name. Both parents from Ghana and I are first-generation Ghanaian Americans. SooFire is a brand, a lifestyle a bridge between Africans of the diaspora. “AFRICA” is a design that I created that bridges us as one.
Africa is LOVE. There isn’t any prints or cultures tied behind the style and that what makes it very easy for all nationalities to rock AFRICA. We all came from AFRICA at some point, it is the motherland. I’m Ghanaian but one of my first major artist endorsements came from South Africa’s top female artist Moonchild Sanelly. I’ve had the support of many Queens such as Busiswa & Kenya’s finest Victoria Kimani. SooFire is also the 1st & only female Ghanaian DJ in Los Angeles & also a music publisher collecting royalties for African artists. (SooFire Music Publishing) (ASCAP)
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It hasn’t been a smooth road, of course, a lot of ideas and strategies were tested as to how to get my designs on the mesh material. Also being the first Ghanaian female DJ in Los Angeles with a different perspective has not been so welcoming in a male-dominated music industry. To all the Queens out there, don’t be intimated, make up your mind and pound at it as hard as you can. Educate yourself and always be two steps ahead & prepared!

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
Being the neighborhood DJ, putting my boombox in the window of my bedroom and choreographing dance moves with all the neighborhood kids. I guess it grew with me.
