Meet Sonya Kirshin of Esendy in Bay Area

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sonya Kirshin.

Sonya, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I always knew who I wanted to be – a fashion designer. Since my childhood, I’ve been drawing girls in beautiful dresses. My mom taught me how to sew. I was sewing for my dolls, first it was hand sewing, then I learned how to use a sewing machine. For some reason, I entered university to pursue a different profession. In 2001, I moved to Israel. In 2014 graduated in Israel as a fashion designer. In the same year, I have founded my clothing brand Esendy. Now I live in California. The new beginning wasn’t easy. I’m a mom of two kids, one four-year-old and one two-year-old. I work from home and I create unique dresses and shoes with feathers. Since 2017 my dresses have been featured in Hollywood movies. The national costume that I created won first place in the Miss Russian San Francisco competition in 2018. In 2019, I presented my latest collection at the final of The Miss Russian California contest. I have my own YouTube channel about fashion and style and I write articles about fashion trends for print media.

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
During first year of my study in Israel, Hebrew was a bit of a problem for me. It was essential to fluently understand the language in order to be a successful student. A language barrier also was a reason why I didn’t have many friends.
Anyway, I graduated as the best student of the Faculty. This is my third year in the USA. I still has not established a reputation of a fashion designer as well as I had in Israel. My colleague and brand co-founder is living in Moscow now and it’s challenging to work on collections and projects together. The variety of fabrics and sewing accessories is much broader in Israel than in the United States.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Esendy – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
I specialize on feathers now. I make shoes with feather embellishments and dresses with feathers. I’m known for feathers, and for fabulous fashion parties I host in the Bay Area. I’m proud that it’s only been two years in the US, but so many people are familiar with my brand now after they attended my parties, they have become my clients. My brand is recognizable, memorable and desirable by many women. Wearing my dresses, women feel special and unique.

So, what’s next? Any big plans?
I have an ambitious plan to move to LA and become a member of CFDA (Council of Fashion Designers of America), my plan is to have my dresses to be featured in world-famous events, like Oscar, Grammy, Cannes Festival and so on. I plan to open a studio and showroom for my clients. The biggest change I’m looking forward to is to find partners, like-minded people to work together.
