Meet Sofia Araya of INSHALA DESIGN

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sofia Araya.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Sofia. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I grew up in a narrow and long country far away from, well, everything. Chile is where my imagination inspired a favorite game of mine, Open House-y, which consisted of a three-year-old me boring showing my mom around our childhood house as if I were selling it to her. (We’ve since lived in twenty-two other homes. So, I get the importance of making a home your own.) My early love of homes also extended to design and beautifying living spaces. This was made evident one summer when I was twelve.

While my sister was away on vacation, I turned her bedroom into my ‘While You Were Away’ makeover project. (Goodbye, hideous clown wallpaper; hello, whitewashed walls and floral prints.) My sister would agree—since she continually suffered the consequences of my passion—that I was destined to be an interior designer.

On the spiritual side of things, I grew up under a soul-seeking, Reiki-practicing, tarot-reading mom. Though I respected her “woo-woo” ways— honestly way out there and at times kind of wacky —I never thought it was for me. It wasn’t until my teens after suffering from anxiety and not so comfortable stuff that my real journey with spirituality began.

I dabbled in angel cards, read all the mandatory self-help books (Marianne Williamson, Louise Hay, Gabrielle Bernstein), and began a regular meditation practice. In LA I became a certified Reiki practitioner, Intuitive Healer, and Akashic records reader… all while working as an interior designer.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road to spirituality is never easy. I always KNEW things were going to work out for me in the end, but before moving to LA from Chile four years ago, I struggled with anxiety and depression “waves.” It was hard for me because I have always been a naturally happy person, but these emotions took over me, and I didn’t know where they were coming from and why. I went to therapists, psychiatrist, and other alternative healers.

Once I was here, I knew it was where I had to be, but it took me a long time to get rid of the anxiety. It wasn’t until a week after I got certified in Reiki that I removed what I now know is called a “heart wall.” This is an energetic blockage over your heart. I was too afraid to admit it out loud let along talk about it in public because I found it suspicious that after two-three years in therapy, two years on antidepressants.

Five years struggling with on and off anxiety, it had only taken one night of magical energy to get rid of it. Turns out it did, it has been more than a year now, and it has been the first year without anxiety I have had in six years. This is why I believe so much in energy healing and also what I see my clients breakthrough. It’s just magic!

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the INSHALA DESIGN story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a holistic/spiritual interior designer, and I have a signature 5 Step Process that combines interior design with Energy Healing and other “woo woo practices.” I am a certified Akashic Records Reader, Intuitive Energy Healer, and Reiki Practitioner so I combine that with what is commonly known as the traditional interior design process.

After working in Interior Design for five years, I realized I was craving something more, a deeper connection. I wanted to be friends with all the clients, know about their lives, their struggles, what led them to be where they were in life, etc. I also studied a lot about how your home reflects what is going on in your life (even though I do not practice traditional Feng Shui techniques). My particular process starts by looking at your life, your clutter, your beliefs, your goals, your space and how it all comes together. Then we go through a decluttering phase, a designing phase, space clearing/healing phase and a styling phase.

I like to focus on the energy of a space and how it relates to what that person needs and wants. I have found the new approach incredibly rewarding, and it is also something that attracts a lot of amazing people being a really unique combination of services. I am so proud of all my clients, every time I leave someone’s house or end a session there is a feeling of gratitude like I can do anything and that is all thanks to them.

I currently have a soft spot for a divorced woman because I think my process is the perfect way for them to reconnect to who they were before marriage. The redesigning of what was once a family home is a truly healing process in which something as frugal as picking out fabrics or wallpapers becomes a way to reconnect to your soul. I LOVE being a friend and confidant through the process.

I think my business was divinely guided to me. Years ago, when I still lived in Chile, I was doing a meditation that was supposed to give you the name of your spirit guide, and I heard “Shala.” This word meant nothing to me, so I ignored it. I kept thinking about it for some days, and I decided to look it up just for fun, and the first thing that came up was the goddess of compassion. (I was like ok, cool)

Years later, as I was thinking of a way to combine my passion for interiors and spirituality I thought: “Oh I could name it “Shala,” I decided to look it up again and saw that it meant Home in Sanskrit (sacred scripture language).” I got goosebumps and knew then I had found my path. I started being strongly led by the universe in the creation of it. I got signs all the time, and the right experiences fell in my lap at the perfect timing.

I also currently have clients that I see in one on one sessions every week. I help them heal beliefs, blockages and get things done, kind of like a spiritual life coach and I love every single part of it.

Is our city a good place to do what you do? Absolutely!
I think spirituality, in particular, is having a HUGE moment. You might think it is only in LA, but I believe it really is going on all around the world. I definitely see it growing more every day, and people are ready. There is a huge awakening and collective healing going on and it makes me so excited to be a part of that. I can’t wait to watch as it keeps growing more and more.
