Meet Skye -Lanise Jasper of Skye the Doula in South Central

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skye -Lanise Jasper.

Skye -Lanise, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I am 24 years old and I am a prenatal and postpartum Doula! I originally wanted to become an Ob/Gyn but during my undergraduate studies I began interning with a midwife in the valley and she introduced me into the world of midwifery and out of hospital birth. I really grew to love the ways a midwife cares for her patient it is completely different than the hospital model of care.

As a doula, my job is to provide physical, emotional, and mental support to the birthing person throughout their entire pregnancy as well as the postpartum months. Not only do I provide support to the person delivering but support to the family and operate as a resource to hospital staff and their primary care provider. It is my job to equip the birthing person with all the physical tools needed to have a supportive and engaged birth experience no matter where the person chooses to birth.

Doulas are not only limited to women who are actively in labor outside of the hospital, our care is open to people choosing to birth in the hospital our out of hospital before they go into labor as well as after they have already delivered their baby. As a doula I provide and an extra set of ears to listen, an extra shoulder to lean on, and another set of hands to hold. I am here to make sure that your birth happens the way you want, and to remind you that no matter where your birth setting is you have options and choices. I advocate for you and encourage you to find your voice as you embark on this new journey.

Has it been a smooth road?
The road has not been easy becoming a doula and student midwife, but everything has aligned me to be right where I need to be. I am where I belong and doing exactly what my purpose is in this life. I believe it is everyone’s mission to find their purpose in this life, it does not come easy and it is not easily revealed. Apart of what makes us good at what are calling is the obstacles that we endured to get to the next step. So I would not say that I struggled to get here, I am just on my journey and everything good, bad, and in between are all needed in order for me to grow.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Skye the Doula – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of and what sets you apart from others.
As a doula, I provide physical emotional and mental support to birthing people and people who have already delivered their babies. My scope covers birthing positions, breathing techniques, lactation & breastfeeding counseling, mental and emotional support, aromatherapy, rebozo massage, and closing of the bones ceremony after delivery. I also am a certified childbirth educator, as an educator, I teach both private and group workshops on birthing, labor, and postpartum.

In these workshops, we discuss what physiological changes are happening within the body, coping mechanisms during labor & discuss in detail the different factors that assist in labor, and we also discuss the postpartum period and how to adjust to having a new baby. By the end of the course, couples will be able to make more informed decisions about medical procedures and their options. Be more confident in their skills to take care of a newborn. Be more comfortable with the idea of natural childbirth and have developed a coping mechanism. Found their voice to speak about their rights and options.

I am most proud of my ability to connect with people and inspire them to find their voice. I enjoy helping them understand themselves and encouraging them to remember that birth is normal and natural.

What sets me apart is the existent of my training, I do not believe that learning stops once you have completed something. My job is to keep growing and staying well educated on birthing topics so that I can best educate my clients and help them make the best decision for them.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
I love LA the only problem is the traffic, of course.

The diversity in LA is absolutely amazing, you can see all different types of cultures and people all in one city. Being able to experience a piece of someone who’s view on life is opposite of your own can be extremely enlightening, and we have the ability to do that in such an amazing city. Also I love food and we have some of the best tacos ever.
