Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Collins.
Jay, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I am from Kansas City and was raised by a single mother. I have always had a love for all things art and my first art form that I fell into was photography. I had a bunch a disposable cameras I would shoot all sorts of things, people, friends, family, I mean you name it. From there, I continued to shoot until I was gifted my first digital camera. I really didn’t realize I was building something that would become my future. From there, I have evolved as a photographer and now graphic designer, shooting all sorts of things still to this day!
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Hell no! hahaha. The road has been everything but smooth. I encountered pursuing careers that others wanted me to. I lost family and close friends because they didn’t understand my passion and desire to be an entrepreneur in the art world. I was homeless and carless. I lost so much of my personal things. I lost love and fell into depression. Not to mention the struggles with companies and clients that have put myself and business in compromising positions. Honestly, the road of entrepreneurship is rough, but I wouldn’t trade it for the world. It has made me stronger, more passionate, and knowledgable.
Please tell us about sKCatterbrain.
So my brand, sKCatterbrain, began with creating a brand that lets me encompass all that I am and can do. Photography, Graphic Design, Videography, Art Direction, Set Direction, and modeling. As I have evolved over time, my business has honed in on niches by specializing in small business creative direction and photography! I am mostly known for my photography. I would say what sets me apart is my ability to communicate and relate to any and everyone that way there is a comfort level when we are working together and I am able to pull a story from them to make the images or brand creation that much better! I am most proud of myself for not giving up. Through all the struggles and moments where I wanted to give up and break down. After being put out not 1 not 2 but 3 times by loved ones, I knew that nothing, absolutely NOTHING would stop me!
If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
I would have invested my money much differently. Other than that, I wouldn’t change a thing. Everything happens for a reason and I needed the lesson to learn and become better.
