Meet SJ Carter of The Database Pros in Long Beach

Today we’d like to introduce you to SJ Carter.

SJ, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
You probably hate Mondays. I know I certainly used to. I was ecstatic when I got my first job out of college, but the excitement soon faded to frustration and even trepidation whenever Sunday rolled around. Sunday evening meant the end of the weekend, the end of freedom. Instead, my life would fall back into a humdrum routine of commuting–uninspired work–junk food–commuting-and repeat. I was not born to work in an office.

With this realization, I decided to break free and start my own business.

I founded The Database Pros with two goals in mind: to provide top-tier database and web programming services to small businesses, while crafting a great work-life.

I am happy to say that The Database Pros has so far lived up to its mission for both clients and staff. The Database Pros is growing month by month. We are picking up new clients who have a real need for the database services and custom software that we provide. Our service offerings have expanded from merely providing consulting services for database designs and queries, to creating custom web-based software and providing small group training in SQL. Our custom database-driven software services have become so popular that The Database Pros is creating a subsidiary company: Sofy CMS is a spin-off software company that will provide a suit of CRM and business data management applications geared towards small businesses.

At The Database Pros, we love what we do, and it shows in the quality of work and customer service we provide. Whether you have data import problems, need to convert your Excel worksheets into a proper database, or need a custom software solution for your business, we’ve got you covered.

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
It’s been a lot smoother than I originally anticipated when I began The Database Pros. Our biggest struggle to date has been getting new clients. However, as the weeks pass, we find ourselves fielding more calls, providing more estimates, and taking in more client work.

I would count under-pricing our services as a secondary struggle. When The Database Pros first began, we still hadn’t found our footing for pricing, which led to us taking some jobs below a reasonable rate. However, I don’t see this as a loss so much as a learning moment. It got our foot in the door with some clients, and gave use much needed experience and the confidence to pursue larger projects and give higher estimates.

Please tell us about The Database Pros.
As you may have guessed from the name, The Database Pros focuses on database related services. This includes cleaning and import of large amounts of data, database design and architecture, and database optimization. In addition, we also create custom database-drive web software and management systems. Most of our clients are small businesses who find that their previous use of Access or Excel are no longer good choices to manage their business data. They have too much data, and it’s far too complex to hold in spreadsheets. That’s where we come in. We create web-based management solutions that allow small business to efficiently and effectively manage their leads, clients, employees, and business workflows.

Since we are a small company whose target demographic is other small companies, we provide a friendly, one-on-one relationship for our clients. At The Database Pros, every client is our number one client.

Whenever we close out a project, I feel a swell of pride in knowing that my passion has helped create a useful product that will allow another small business to work more efficiently and grow faster.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
Honestly? I would have started earlier. 🙂
