Today we’d like to introduce you to Sindy Habib and Kelly Hall.
Sindy and Kelly are both full time, practicing Veterinarians. During breaks at the hospital, we would often fantasize about starting a business that would make people smile.
Sindy grew up in New York, where early on in her life, her father made ice cream and Italian ice and created many unique ice cream desserts.
Kelly grew up in Reno, Nevada, where she was the baker and dessert maker of her large family.
Opening Sonny’s has allowed us to use our love of science and creativity to formulate unique, delicious flavors of Italian Ice, Creme Ice, & Ice Cream.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Opening Sonny’s took over a year and taught us a great deal about small businesses in Los Angeles. During the build out and permit phase, everything that could go wrong, did!
We worked very hard to do everything correctly, and there were times where we felt our dream would never be realized. Through sheer determination, with almost all of the permits obtained by us, we finally did it! Because of the expense of our equipment, and our inability to practice before final health department inspections, we had to hit the ground running! Our first commercial batches were made following those final inspections, and the majority of them were created by the two of us. All of this, while the two of us maintain full time Veterinary positions.
So, let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Sonny’s Amazing Italian Ices & Cremes story. Tell us more about the business.
All of our products are made on-site, in small batches. We make Italian Ice, which is dairy free, gluten free, fat free, vegan. We also make Creme Ice, which is only 25% dairy, thus making it a creamier version of Italian Ice or a lighter version of Ice Cream.
Our third product line is Super Premium Ice Cream. We strive to use the highest quality ingredients available. Many of our products contain fresh fruit, baked goods, the finest chocolate, and pure vanilla extracts. With the rise in cost of pure vanilla extract, from about $80/gallon when we opened to about $400/gallon now, we have not wavered in our goal to provide the best products possible, and we have kept our prices very affordable.
We love that we have a product that attracts a wide range of customers and many families. We also love that we have come to know many of our patrons and have made many new friends!
