Today we’d like to introduce you to Savannah & Dan Torres.
Savannah & Dan, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
We’ve been in business since 2014, and our idea was just to be Day-Of coordinators, but our creativity pushed us into all aspects of planning. We do everything from floral work, beauty services, décor, woodwork and ceremony music.
I (Savannah) first started as a hair and makeup artist. I thought I wanted to do makeup for film but soon found a passion for the bridal industry. My day job as a coordinator for a publishing company felt like a dead end, but I liked being in charge. Eventually, I found my footing in weddings and thought why not blend both my worlds. I approached Dan with this idea of wedding planning, and he jumped on board without ever looking back. I originally had a different partner, but it was pretty clear she wasn’t as invested. Shortly after booking our first wedding she backed out, and I felt a little lost. Dan stepped in as my assistant.
Halfway through that wedding, we looked at each other and instantly knew this was the team. Us together was a better team than we could have searched for. Some couples can’t work together, and I get it- it’s a lot. However, we felt like it was a good fit. We are very similar but also very different. My creative nature has a mind of its own and Dan’s analytical personality keeps all my ideas in check. That is what makes us perfect for this company. We see each other for all of our great qualities and pick up where the other one needs help. While I, Dan, had no intention of joining this venture when Savannah first presented it, I knew somewhere in my head that is where it would lead.
Without getting too much into our past experiences, suffice it to say, we have had our share of hard times. Learning from them propelled us to be positive, fearless thinkers. I think what allows us to work best is that we truly can work as a team instead of individuals near each other. We have been together for nearly 14 years, and we know each other pretty well. I know that when she has an idea it’s going to be big and grand, and all I can do is take it in and try to come up with the best way to make it a reality. At the end of the day we both just trust each other, and that is half the battle.
This thought process has brought us some incredible moments in our career. We have done everything from weddings of 25 people to well over 300. We take joy in being able to join these couples on what we call a great adventure. Wedding planning can definitely be stressful, so our goal is to be the couples’ sounding board, voice of reason and coordinators. We love being able to travel in our city and beyond. We love meeting new couples, their families and learning what is most important to them. We really do have our dream job.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
We would never call owning a business a smooth road. You put your heart and soul into this, so a little struggle is normal. We began not knowing if this would take off and provide for us and our two kids. We were fortunate enough to have a great group of referrals/word of mouth to cultivate a solid first year.
Within two years of opening, we were able to quit one of our day jobs and focus purely on this business. The struggles we now face are making time as a family and separating work and home. We are so lucky to have kids who get excited by what we do.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Simply S Events – what should we know?
Our wedding planning company covers so much more than just planning. We also do custom woodwork for décor, floral arrangement, beauty services, and ceremony music. The biggest thing that sets us apart is us.
Having a married couple as your planners tend to put couples’ minds at ease. They feel so comfortable handing over their day to us. We’ve been through a wedding as the couple and now many times as the coordinators. Also, we’re really fun. As silly as that sounds, it’s a key to who we are. We remind the couple and their families to have fun.
Weddings are meant to be celebrated, not stressed over. Tying back to the referrals we have been given, that has become our proudest moment. Knowing that we were able to impact someone positively with our work and attitude is huge. They see us showing them the joy of it all and the tell their friends.
Or guests from weddings call us later and say, “Oh my gosh you guys were so great! You look like you’re having fun doing this. I want you to plan my wedding.” It’s a great testament to our hard work and hearts. We love doing this.
Any shoutouts? Who else deserves credit in this story – who has played a meaningful role?
We owe a huge amount to my (Savannah’s) parents and older sister. They always jump in with the kids. This is a big deal for us. Weddings take us away for an entire weekend and knowing our kids are cared for is beyond helpful. We have been able to pursue this business because they support us. Simply S Events has another dynamic duo -Amanda and Heath.
They have joined us in many weddings as partners, literally doing any and everything for us. They never say no to our ideas. It’s incredible to have met friends who can also work with us. We could not dream without them. We also have a great beauty team- Mia and Roxanne- who always step in for our big bridal parties. They are fantastic!
We have cultivated such strong relationships with other wedding vendors that we have to thank them too. It’s an honor to work with all of them.
