Meet Simone Taylor of VooDoo Guru Digital Media in Mid-City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Simone Taylor.

Simone, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I worked in the cell phone industry for a decade and in 2013 I reached a point in my life where I needed a drastic change and a new career path. Towards the end of 2014 I reconnected with my birthday twin and the man who hired me for my first job at age 18, Bangloose. At the time he was pushing a rapper/producer duo by the name of OHNO. They were signed to his label, Builders Music Group aka Builders International. He didn’t bring me on board right away. He would randomly invite me to their rehearsals, shows and interviews. The more I came around I started taking charge and telling him how I could help. I started helping Bang sell merch and creating content on Social Media for OHNO, which at the time I had no idea Social Media was a real job. He was basically interviewing me without me knowing. Fast forward to 2016, I paid my dues and I was ready to brand myself outside of Builders. At that point I had made a name for myself in the Music Industry. An opportunity presented itself to speak at Khrissy B’s first annual Women In Music panel alongside guests like Real 92.3 on-air personality Ayydé and Heavy Camp Music President, Melissa Keslak and that was the final sign I needed. Speaking on that panel started the launch of VooDoo Guru Digital Media and opened so many doors for me.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
My journey in the music industry has been a roller coaster ride to say the least. I pride myself on always doing good business even when others try to get over on me. Working with so many different personalities in this business is very frustrating but with my experience I’ve learned to adapt to any situation. I do my best work under pressure and I love a challenge!

Please tell us about VooDoo Guru Digital Media.
My company, VooDoo Guru Digital Media was created initially as an extension of my business partner’s company – Builders International, which I help him run. Builders International offers a combination of various services such as Digital Marketing, Distribution, Recording Studio Sessions, and much more. When I first came on board to Builders in 2014, I literally started from the bottom but I had some great mentors along the way – Bangloose, Jentry Salvatore, Troy & Sylvon Marshall. Fast forward to 2019, I took everything I learned from my mentors and applied that to my own business. Thanks to them passing the torch to me I am now known for being a dot connector in the industry. I work with both seasoned artists and artists on the rise but I primarily focus on Artist Development. I’ll spare you the laundry list of services I offer, you can see them listed on my website. To keep it simple, the best way to describe my role is an Artist Manager and Publicist merged into one. Although I would never refer to myself as a Publicist, they have a tough job and I applaud them for all they do. However, the thing that makes a Publicist successful is his/her relationships and I am able to assist my clients with various opportunities based off my relationships. My greatest asset is my desire to connect with my clients and ensure the artist wins. What sets me apart from others is my work ethic; because I wear so many hats I’m able to get the job done quickly and efficiently. Not only do I work with artists but producers and DJs as well. I have a strong relationship with BPM Supreme record pool so I am able to bridge relationships between artists and DJs.

Do you look back particularly fondly on any memories from childhood?
My favorite memory from my childhood is my relationship with my grandmother, I called her Gammy. She was creative, outspoken, loving, thoughtful, funny and much more. She had a story she use to tell me called “Mary & the Liver” and she was so animated when she told that story that I always asked to hear it, especially during bath time. She was so creative with everything she did to the point I was convinced Santa, the Tooth Fairy and the Easter Bunny were all real!
