Meet Si’mone “MusiqMone” Hines of Splash Red Musiq Studio in Downtown LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Si’mone “MusiqMone” Hines.

Si’mone “MusiqMone”, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I was born in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina, but raised in Virginia. Music has always been a huge part of my life. Growing up as the middle child, I enjoyed spending time alone listening to music and writing songs.

After graduating a year early from Thomas Dale High School in Chesterfield, VA, I worked multiple jobs to save up for college. I attended Virginia State University and graduated with a B.A in Accounting in 2011 with honors and apart of a prestigious organization, Delta Sigma Theta, Incorporated. A week later, I moved to Maryland to pursue my accounting career. I worked on Federal engagements for six years.

In 2013, I purchased recording software and equipment as the first step towards a career in music. At the time, my friend KimaniAmor had shared her dreams of becoming a professional recording artist and I took on the role of manager and engineer. For two years, I managed a full-time job as an accountant and recording engineer while booking and attending shows for KimaniAmor.

As my passion for the music industry grew, I enrolled in Full Sail University for Audio Production while still working full time at Ernest & Young. In 2016, I decided to resign from accounting, packed my car, and drive to Los Angeles with my artist, KimaniAmor and figure the rest out from there. When I got here, I decided to enroll into The Los Angles Film/Recording School for Recording Arts. My knowledge and skills in music grew and I gained an interest in Music Production, so I purchased a Native Instrument Maschine to teach myself how to make beats. I received my Associate’s degree in Recording Arts in Spring 2018 and in Audio Production in June of 2019, graduating as valedictorian.

Since then, I have worked on multiple projects with close friends as a recording/mixing engineer and music producer. I also decided to open up a music studio in Downtown, Los Angeles, known as “Splash Red Musiq Studio”. Having my own music studio has always been a dream of mine, and it has been a beautiful experience so far. A lot of thought went into the design and aesthetics of the room because, not only do I aim to provide each client with quality sound, I wanted to provide a safe, clean, chill space that promotes as much creativity as possible. It makes me feel so good when a client walks in and compliments the room and how much they like it. With word of mouth promotion, the clientele has been growing. Unfortunately, as of now, with the Coronavirus and lockdown, the studio has been shut down. However, once it is safe to open back up, I plan to promote more heavily and gain more clientele.

My career has been on a steady rise. I create from feeling, with a sound that is distinctive and I am determined to make my mark in the music industry. I love working on all types of music, as well as sound for film. I will continue collaborating with industry colleagues and upcoming artist to make some amazing, timeless music.

Has it been a smooth road?
Not at all. This journey has been filled with ups and downs and lots of uncertainty. From finding a place to live here in Los Angeles, to going back to Virginia for a year to regroup and start over. From let’s make this happen as a team, to okay you have to make this happen by yourself. From learning as I a going to dealing with regular life obstacles and going through long periods of not feeling creative or good enough. From, stepping out of my shy shell, to meeting and working with new people and gaining confidence, which still is an ongoing thing for me. Lastly, a car accident where someone ran a red light as I was turning onto the street to the studio and totaling my car, which left me unable to work for two months as I recovered, while still having to pay studio rent. Unfortunately, right as I get enough mental and physical strength to get back in the studio, the current struggle around the world in which I am unable to work out of the studio and make money during this pandemic. However, as with each and every down, I just keep growing as much as possible and looking forward to the ups.

We’d love to hear more about your work and what you are currently focused on. What else should we know?
Well as MusiqMone, I engineer, produce music, write songs, sound design and sound for TV and Film when I can.

Splash Red Musiq Studio is a brand new fully functional music studio located in Downtown, Los Angeles. We offer quality recording, mixing, mastering, music production, sound design, post-production, and vocal production services at affordable prices. The studio is equipped with the latest equipment and software to achieve a high-quality sound. With comfortable seating, changeable lighting, the studio provides a creative environment that is adaptable to artists of all types.

What sets Splash Red apart from others is that we care about your overall experience. Each recording session is either ran by myself or Skool (@MixedBySkool) who has been doing his thing in the industry for a while. We want to provide each artist the quality sound they need and deserve to make the record stand out as much as it possibly can. We like to build ongoing relationships, if possible, and help out in all areas of the process if needed. I have been to lots of different studios here in LA, and most of the affordable ones look and feel whole-in-the-wall like. In my experience that makes me rush the process, which doesn’t allow me to be as creative a possible. That’s why I aimed to provide a space that looks and feels as professional as some of the higher-priced studios at a more affordable rate, with an overall creative feel.

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Since I am fairly new at running a business here, I can tell you that it definitely takes some time. Luckily for me, I have been to lots of events and networked with a lot of artists, which helps to get the business out there. I have also been fortunate enough to meet a lot of very talented artists through a writing camp called “Sunday Skool” that meets every Sunday, and have gained lots of clientele through the Sunday Skool family.

In the short time that I have been open, I think that this is definitely a good place for this type of business. Especially if you focus on promoting to those who see the importance of investing in their music career. Of course, you will always come across those who, even after charging less than you could to keep an affordable rate, still complain that your prices are too high or are looking for handouts, etc. However, it is important to remember to always charge what you are worth, that will almost always eliminate those that are not as serious about their craft as they think they are, and allow you to work with exactly who you need to.

  • Regular price is $60/hour, however, I have been doing $45/hour since I opened to help promote the new studio. Block prices are available and artists are encouraged to follow the Instagram page @splashredmusiqstudio to catch random Splash Deals
