Today we’d like to introduce you to Simon Needham.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Simon. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Born in the North of England, I began my career in graphic design at 18 years old opening an agency in my business partner’s grandmas attik. We also named our business ATTIK. Over 25 years we built up and agency that had seven offices around the world and employed at its peak 350 staff. Having sold the business to a large global ad agency, I then decided to spend my time following my passions of travel, directing and photography. My new work is split into three categories, Professional photography and directing, humanitarian and conservation photography and Fine art stemming from my photography work. In my current professional work, I have shot for large and small brands including shooting two global campaigns for Mountain Dew (Pepsi).
Creating meaning full content and traveling around the world has been one of many benefits of shooting for NGO’s and so far, I have worked with charities in Tanzania, Bolivia, Nepal, South Africa and many others. I recently started creating art from some of my images some of which I have neon incorporated into them and are as large as 5ft x 7 ft pieces. Im currently working on a new set of images stemming from a shoot I did in South Africa for several charities. I also give 50% of all profits back to the charities I work for.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Obviously building up a large Advertising agency was not easy and there were many struggles but I think the main reason we succeeded was due to a single-minded vision of our end goal our passion for the work we did and the attitude of never giving up even when the odds are stacked against us. I try and continue that philosophy as I move forward with my new ventures.
Simon Needham Photography – what should we know? What do you do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
As a photographer, I tend to be best known for my fitness, health and sports photography. My directing work has me more focused on car commercials however I’m certainly moving that aspect into directing fitness content as well. Working with charities has given me a chance to capture more ‘real life’ images and stories which has been a great experience so far and added a lot to my overall skill levels. I believe it’s my creative passion for what I do and my drive to create unique content that separates me from others.
What moment in your career do you look back most fondly on?
Having had the opportunity to travel the world as a paid photographer has been amazing and to have then transformed some of my work into art that people actually want to buy and then given back to the companies I worked for in the first place is certainly very fulfilling!
