Meet Simi Valley Professional Photographer and Retoucher: J.R. Maddox

Today we’d like to introduce you to J.R. Maddox.

J.R., please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started 5 years ago right when I found out we were having our first child. I wanted to be able to take pictures of him so I picked up whatever camera we had here which I think it was a Canon Rebel. I first started shooting anything and everything until I found what it was a liked to shoot. I shot anything for free until I felt that I was worth being paid, which didn’t take long until I felt I was worth some little bit of a payment. Shooting paid gigs from time to time on the weekend was what I did for about a year. I started really loving doing portraits and retouching and won a Guru award from the Kelbyone Photoshop World in Las Vegas. Shortly thereafter I was laid off from my day job. At this time I was doing a lot of Real Estate photography for some of the local realtors in my area. Once I had more time to put into my photography I went in 100% into my career. I currently have been a full-time Photographer for 1 and half years supporting my family. My main income is Real Estate Photography. Though my passion is in compositing and retouching/photo manipulation. I still do these things for personal projects of my own so I keep myself fresh on new editing skills and most importantly to keep photography fun. I find that self-projects teach you so much and at the end of the day it is fun. I’m always learning. I currently try and watch or read at least 30 minutes a day on subjects that I am interested in and or feel that I need to be better at. I follow people on social media that inspire me by the work that they do. There are so many different ways to create via photography that I find inspiration in so many different ways. At the end of the day, I love to create…. My personal projects are far from what I do on a daily basis for photography. But that’s what is so much fun about photography.

Has it been a smooth road?
Smooth, no way… It’s a slow process. To this day I create goals and when I achieve that goal I create new ones. Since the beginning of this journey in photography, I have been taking one step at a time and get higher and higher on that ladder every day. I would never want to just have started out then be a huge success. It sounds great, but I wouldn’t have learned as much as I have on this journey if I would have done it any different.

Do you feel luck has played a role in your life?
Luck, hmmm. I wouldn’t be too sure if I had much luck, which I’m sure I may have had some, but I do have drive and passion. I make sure to put myself out there where I am needed and I try not to be a secret to the people that could use my services. Which is everyone….

Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
I love working with people. Most of my clients become friends as I really get to know my clients so that I can better serve them. My clients are not just another job to me. I’m excited to be able to be a part of whatever it is I’m shooting for them. But the bottom line for me is to Over Exceed the client’s expectations.

What do you love about our city and what do you dislike?
There are so many avenues to explore in our city here. Anything you can think of we have it here.
What I like least is that we don’t get enough clouds here… =) I love having clouds in some of my images… So whenever there is a day of cool clouds I’m out there shooting them so I can add them into my images.
