Meet Silvano Barba and Melissa Clarke of Clarke & Barba in Culver City

Today we’d like to introduce you to Silvano Barba and Melissa Clarke.

Clarke & Barba is an L.A. based company was started with the idea that quality and value could be one in the same. They truly care about their products and are involved in every aspect of them. They choose prints and materials that they find interesting and different to give your outfit more unique look and ensure everything is made by hand to provide quality products with unmatched attention to detail.

Established in 2009, Wife and husband Melissa & Silvano were inspired by a mutual love for one another and for fashion during a chance meeting in 1993. After establishing the fashion blog Mode Populi, they decided to release a line of fine handcrafted accessories under Clarke & Barba with their individual and unique take on everyday classics for all to enjoy.

“We want this company to have the same values as our blog. Fashion (Mode) for the People (Populi). Fashion is about confidence. It’s like walking with a smile on your face or having good posture. Wearing something that makes you look good on the outside will make you feel good inside. Therefore, giving you confidence to do what you want with your life. What you wear is a form of self-expression; anyone can buy what’s on the mannequin and follow trends. Style is knowing who you are, what you want to say, and not giving a damn! We want to share this way of positive thinking with the things that inspire us in fashion. To share the confidence, share the fashion, share the Mode Populi.”

Has it been a smooth road?
Having your own business is never a smooth road. We personally make all our products out of our small condo, and at times struggle to balance it from being a home we work out of or a workshop we live in. At the same time, along with the production side of it, we manage all aspects of our business from social media, marketing, craft/trade shows and anything in between. Though it seems overwhelming at times, we have grown to embrace the bumps and struggles along the way and try to learn from them. We love what we do and are happy in the growth and direction our company is heading and wouldn’t change a thing.

So, as you know, we’re impressed with Clarke & Barba – tell our readers more, for example what you’re most proud of as a company and what sets you apart from others.
We hand make leather goods and accessories. We started with pocket squares and leather wallets but have grown to handbags and jewelry. Recently, we have become recognized for our most popular products, like our leather Spike Handle Clutch, small leather Tote Bags and unique leather jewelry. We take pride in using minimal pieces of leather to make our products, that means fewer seams and improved overall durability. Since we don’t mass produce our products, we are able to put more attention to detail and care in the making of each and every one of our items. We like to seek out unique leathers and fabrics that give our products and elegance with edge that sets us apart from others.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
Both of us are proud to be born and raised in L.A. We know how lucky we are to be in a city with such diversity, individuality and opportunities. While there is great opportunity here, that also makes for greater competition which keeps us on our toes. Getting to know fellow leather goods companies through the years, we’ve come to realize that there’s a market for each of our individual styles in this city that we love.
