Today we’d like to introduce you to Sierra Barrett.
Sierra, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I have always been a creative person and therefore have always enjoyed creating through all types of mediums. I predominately work as a Costumer, and with that I often sketch or paint designs. Through my work and love for art I met a friend and we started an “Art Challenge” that really got me hooked on watercolor painting. I wanted to practice in a medium known for being hard to control. Having fellow artist friends to encourage me I became more aware of my own unique style and that tiny detailed illustrations were something I loved. Thanks to a necklace I already owned and a comment made by a friend, I decided to try and do small illustrations to go in necklaces. It took a bit of time to find my stride, but due to the positive feedback from my community, I realized I was onto something. The concept of being able to wear happy little images was exciting and felt worth pursuing. We could all use a little extra joy, right? Therefore I started building a website and accepting commissioned pieces. It’s exciting to see something I enjoy doing be so positively received by so many people.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
There are challenges along the way, absolutely. I have never considered myself to be an entrepreneur or someone to run a business. One of the first things I had to do was change my own perspective of my abilities. When you chase after something you’ve never done before, you will be met with doubt, worries and comparison. Will people like my art? Can I fill orders fast enough? I don’t have a degree, can I do this? But those are things that don’t need to stop you. Once I could overcome doubting myself things began to smooth out more, or at least I had the moment to deal with the next roadblock. I must say, I am very fortunate that I have a few fellow ladies who have their own creative businesses and their support and input helped ground me through the process. It is exceedingly helpful to have resources when things get tricky.
Alright – so let’s talk business. Tell us about Painted Pendants – what should we know?
Our Mission Statement: The mission behind Painted Pendants is to create whimsical original paintings that you can take with you as you go about your life. Each painting is done by hand and therefore you are getting a one-of-a-kind painting of your very own. Painted Pendants understands that each person wants to rock their pendant in a different way, therefore you have options whether it’s a keychain, necklace or bracelet to display your art.
The company specializes in small roughly penny-quarter sized watercolor illustrations and one of the most unique things about Painted Pendants is that every painting is done by hand and is not mass-produced. Custom orders are also a part of our operation, which allows for fun collaboration between the artist and customer. We want people to have that opportunity to have their idea or photo brought to life and make it so that they can take it with them.
Is there a characteristic or quality that you feel is essential to success?
For me, it would probably be my ability to connect with people. Although I’m often painting without others around, I am often trying to create art that people will connect with. When it comes to making custom paintings, it is exceedingly helpful to be able to know someone and through that knowledge come up with a piece they’ll really love. It could also help that I am a very eclectic person and therefore can enjoy a wide variety of styles, images and people!
