Today we’d like to introduce you to Shye Eaze.
Shye, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I started Mama Shye’s Hair Care when I was 38 weeks pregnant with my daughter, Zara. I had been making DIY hair oils along with other natural deep conditioning remedies for my hair and scalp already, and one day in the kitchen it just clicked. Why don’t I share this product with other naturals? I started off only selling a pre-mixed “Clay Wash” out of unused condiment bottles I bought off amazon and would wrap each order in dollar store tissue paper and put in a gift bag. I look back and chuckle at this now because in all actuality I had no idea what I was doing in regards to selling, I just knew I had to start somewhere.
My cousin Nikki Kurtz has been a huge help to me in promotion, creating my logo, and setting up my website. My great friend and photographer of witEAZE ent., Blaze, rented a studio for my first photoshoot. My hubby, co-workers, and extended family were my models. My good friend whom I met through witEAZE ent. Open Mic, Kim, shot and edited my first promo video. I printed labels for my bottles, had all my inventory in line, and the rest is history. Mama Shye’s Hair Care wouldn’t be where it was today without my support system.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
Negative. Lol. I was spending way too much money, in the beginning, buying individual bottles to fill with product and finally learned that I could buy bulk product from a warehouse. Saved me so many unnecessary trips to the beauty supply.
With Zara being our first child, I had no idea that juggling family life and trying to run a business with a newborn was going to be as challenging as it was. I had to learn time-management and really be patient.
The entire journey has been trial and error, and although I do feel like I have a better understanding on how to run a business, I also know there is plenty of room for growth. I am looking forward to the next chapter of Mama Shye’s Hair Care.
Mama Shye’s Hair Care – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Mama Shye’s Hair Care is an all natural hair care line specializing in the growth of healthy hair. I create each order in my kitchen to order, hand wrap them, and personally sign a thank you note. I am known for my OG growth oil, which is my highest seller. I am most proud of the fact that I started this company without knowing the path, but knowing the end result, and I love that I continued the journey through post-partum. I am proud that I make the time to ensure great quality service and treat each customer as if they are family. I think what sets Mama Shye’s Hair Care apart from other hair care lines is that there is no discrimination. There is such a stigma of what “natural hair” needs to be, and I specifically partnered with a wig specialist Tiara to show that you are beautiful and authentic no matter what style you choose to rock your hair. Wearing a fro doesn’t make you more powerful than a woman who chooses to wear a wig, and wearing a wig or extensions doesn’t make you prettier than the girl with the fro. Mama Shye’s Hair Care is here to protect the hair growing from your scalp no matter what style you choose to wear.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
Success is a feeling. Success is going to sleep at night, feeling fulfilled. Knowing that you did everything in your power that day to make tomorrow another step closer to your goal. Seeing my husband smile, hearing my daughter laugh, and knowing that I did something to contribute to that is success. Looking back to one year ago, I am successful now. A year from now, I’ll be looking back, and still saying that I am successful. Each year, I want to do something I have never done before, and this year, it will be having my first Annual Hair Show. I’ve always wanted to be in one, go to one, be a part of one, and this year, I said: “Just throw one!” A leap of faith and following through is success to me.
