Today we’d like to introduce you to Shirley Wang.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Shirley. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
I grew up in Southern California and was a very curious child, always wanting to learn more. In college, I studied psychology, which gave me a deeper understanding of human behavior, the impact of early childhood trauma and the power of the mind. I taught third grade for a few years, where I enjoyed nurturing the natural curiosity in children. Later, I went on to pursue my passion of becoming a doctor and graduated from USC Medical School with an MD.
Growing up in a Chinese immigrant family, I spent time with cousins in the medical field who combined both Eastern and Western methods to health and wellness. I was drawn to the integrative approach and felt that, while conventional medicine is necessary, it wasn’t fully comprehensive. This inspired me to open my own Functional Medicine clinic, LevelUP Health Care, in Orange County, CA. I was compelled to forge my own path and take medicine to another LEVEL, hence the name LevelUP.
While conventional medicine is excellent at addressing acute medical conditions like broken bones, heart attacks and communicable disease, Functional Medicine takes a more proactive approach, optimizing the patient’s own innate healing power and addressing the underlying cause of illness. When necessary, I include the use of medication. It’s just not my first go-to.
Just like we’ve been taught to get tune ups on our cars rather than waiting for the engines to explode, Functional Medicine proactively invests in getting our systems in optimal shape, which helps prevent disease and is the foundation for good health.
Has it been a smooth road?
The biggest challenge is advocating for my patients in a system that is motivated by profit. The current healthcare industry is focused on disease, not maintaining health. Optimizing wellness is often an uphill battle due to a conflict of interest that keeps insurance companies from investing in health. In the end, the insurance companies win more than the patient or doctor.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Whether your issue is weight management, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, anti-aging, fatigue, anxiety, or depression, we offer evidence-based natural options in addition to conventional medication.
With the fluctuation of hormones over the lifespan, we focus on maintaining a healthy balance to improve quality of life. We believe in the power of food as medicine to address deficiencies in the diet that lead to illness. Addressing the impacts of toxic stress on physical health and getting to the root cause of pain is a vital part of overall wellness. We collaborate with other practitioners to integrate a TRAUMA INFORMED, multidisciplinary approach to serve the best interest of the patient.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
The diverse population of patients in Southern California makes it a great place for an integrative clinic.
Community Outreach is an important value at LevelUP Health Care. In 2019 we will be offering a transition program to assist the transgender community. LevelUp Health Care also offers a scholarship program to people coming out of incarceration for free laser tattoo removal. Helping women who have been victims of domestic violence get aesthetic procedures like laser skin resurfacing, or dark spot removal is something we believe in doing to give them a boost of confidence. We believe that we rise by lifting others.
