Meet Sherwood Forest 3D modeler and Digital Illustrator: Atara Amsel

Today we’d like to introduce you to Atara Amsel.

Atara, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
Since I was a little kid growing up in Brooklyn, NY, I knew I wanted to be an artist. I did not know what type of artist I wanted to be, all I knew was that I loved to draw, and paint, and use my creativity. As I got older, what I wanted to gear my career towards was changing all of the time. When I was 14, I wanted to pursue apparel design. When I was 15, I wanted to pursue shoe design. When I was 17, I decided I wanted to become an interior decorator. After graduating high school and working a summer job, I moved to L,A, After a year of struggling to find steady work, I started looking into interior design programs at different colleges. While doing some research online, I found an interior design program, but on the school’s webpage I saw a different major that really piqued my interest, “Game Art & Design.” I didn’t even think about that being someone’s job! Being a bit of a nerd, and video games being one of my favorite pastimes, I knew I found my calling. After graduating college, I’ve had a few jobs using the skills I’ve learned in school, but once in a while, I work on a small game project that I’m creating all of the art assets for that I hope to be able to release soon.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, by any means. Through struggles with money and other things life has thrown my way, it was hard to stay motivated. Going through college was a bit of a struggle, and sometimes I would doubt myself and my talent. I am also quite the perfectionist, so I was extra hard on myself to make sure everything was perfect before sharing my work (and of course, nothing ever being good enough for my impossible standards that I set for myself). Honestly, if I didn’t have the support and encouragement of my family and friends, I don’t know where I’d be today.

Have you ever felt like giving up?
For several years, I struggled with money, and I had trouble finding work in my field. Being in school and having to dedicate a lot of my time to studying and schoolwork made it even harder to find a job. When I completed college, I ended up looking for online freelancing opportunities and found some pretty good opportunities that helped me pay my bills while looking for more full-time work.

What would you tell someone who is just starting out?
Looking for freelancing opportunities is a great way to get started! Not only do you get to work on different projects, but it’s really good practice and you can learn a lot in the process. Through freelance work, I have also gotten to work on different things I like to do. Instead of only getting to do one thing, like illustrating, I’ve gotten to work on different projects where I got to use my other skills, like 3D modeling and digital image editing.

Is there something you are particularly excited about or working towards?
It’s hard to say what I’m MOST excited about for the future. I just got engaged to my boyfriend of 9 years, so I’m really excited that I’ll be getting married! I’m also starting to teach classes on a website called Skillshare, and I’m really looking forward to helping others learn something I love to do! I also hope to work on a mobile game with my fiance when we can find the time. With my Bachelors of Science degree in Video Game Art & Design and his Bachelors of Science degree in Software development, we have the knowledge and skills to work on it together.
