Meet Sherman Oaks Photographer: Chuck Kovach

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chuck Kovach.

Chuck, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
It started when I was 13 and started drawing, learning shapes, lights and shadows. Loved drawing and still do. Fast forward to 30 some years later and I picked up my first digital camera and fell in love again. Taught myself how to use studio lights and thus started the journey.

Has it been a smooth road?
Being self-taught has a tremendous learning curve. When I was learning lighting, there were a few resources out there, but it seemed there was a secret society keeping all the jewels of wisdom hidden from newbies and just about everyone else who didn’t know. The truth is, like everything in life, you have to learn by doing. Which is exactly what I did. Trial and error. The obstacles were and still are the business side of things. As an artist, you tend to focus on the art,not the business.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and career?
I don’t know if I’d call it luck, but the passion and love I have for photography create a desire which brings things into my life that I need at the time I need them. They say when the student is ready, the teacher will appear. I’ve been fortunate to have the right people at the right time.

Do you feel like there are certain traits that increase the likelihood of success?
My insatiable need to help others succeed. I work on myself through reading, meditation and working out and nutrition,I want others to see they don’t have to struggle through life. I’m constantly asking people about their dreams and where they’re at, what are they doing, what’s stopping them, what are the roadblocks. I want to help. Success leaves clues and there is always a better way of doing something if your way isn’t working.

Let’s touch on your thoughts about our city – what do you like the most and least?
The diverse cultures that live here, is just incredible. They bring a different perspective to life, it’s so refreshing and interesting to see how others experience life in a different way.
Least like? Traffic and parking. In that order, haha.
