Today we’d like to introduce you to Jackie Romero.
Jackie, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I enrolled in makeup school when I was 18 years old expecting it to be a fun hobby I could do on the side. I never expected to love it as much as I did, and after my program was completed I immediately began working on photo shoots for trade and getting myself out there as much as I could. As my career started to blossom, I decided to get my cosmetology license as well due to constant client requests for hair and makeup. I took every opportunity that came my way no matter how small of a job it was. I now get to do both Makeup and Hair full time as a successful freelance artist doing weddings, red carpet events, photo shoots, etc. The best part about my job is making people feel good about themselves and allowing them to see their inner beauty on the outside.
Has it been a smooth road?
Although I am very happy in the position I am in today it hasn’t always been smooth sailing. One of the main struggles I faced in the begging was building up clientele and having to work for free just to get my name out there. When you can’t make a steady income in the begging and also have to put out money for products and advertising it can be a little disheartening. Since I loved what I was doing I was able to push through and force myself to constantly reach out to people in the industry who could connect me to jobs. Also being an extremely shy person most of my life, I definitely had to push myself out of my comfort zone with clients as well as posting my work on social media. This career has definitely cured my shyness and given me confidence in my work.
When you look back, what are you most proud of?
About a year ago I got to do a photo shoot for one of my all time favorite clothing stores, ANGL. This was obviously very exciting for me since I shop there all the time and love their merchandise. I still do photo shoots for them till this day every couple of weeks for their look books and website. Now if I ever order something online I get to see my work on their website and it’s a great feeling.
Tell us more about the struggles you’ve faced along the way.
I definitely had moments in the beginning when I had to struggle in order to gain experience. When I first started taking clients I wasn’t very confident and had to push myself just to get out there. I had to work for free a lot in the beginning and sometimes got taken advantage of because I was new and didn’t know much to charge, what I was worth, etc. Even though I had to deal with a lot of that, in the beginning, it helped me realize my worth today and in that time I also met a lot of people who were willing to help me succeed and find my voice.
Is LA a good place to do what you do?
I absolutely love LA! Even though I was born and raised here I don’t plan on ever leaving. I have talked to other beauty professionals who have lived in other places and came to LA to pursue a career in beauty and they can all agree this is the best place to be. I find that there is always a need for makeup and hair whether it is for a film, red carpet event, wedding, etc. Especially if someone wants to freelance this would be the best place to start out.
