Today we’d like to introduce you to Sherita Rankins.
Sherita, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I studied Finance and International Business at Loyola University Chicago (Go Ramblers), after which I moved to NYC to continue my modeling career. After a few years, I transitioned that career into commercial acting and hosting while still working part-time in non-profit finance. I’ve always had an urge to create content, so I started my blog Busy Wife Busy Life shortly after my wedding as a way to brand myself as a host. Not realizing the business potential at the time, I operated the site without attempting to monetize it for almost 8 months.
After attending my first blog conference, I then started to learn the ins and outs of the blogging business and altered my focus. The blog has continued to grow since then into what it is today. My husband and I moved to LA last year after 10 years in NYC to further my acting career and also launch Busy Wife Social Life, which manages and provides strategic social media planning for small businesses.
Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
At times, it’s been like the PCH on a lazy weekday, and others it like the 405 at rush hour. If you think all bloggers do is wake up and take photos (well some do), you’d be sorely mistaken! In this saturated market, you have to find ways to stand out in the crowd. It’s all about being more creative and creating quality content that your followers will enjoy while still attracting brands to your work. I had to learn to code, become social media savvy and master photography and photo editing, all before lunch.
Busy Wife Busy Life – what should we know? What do you guys do best? What sets you apart from the competition?
Busy Wife Busy Life is a lifestyle site with food, travel, fashion and personal finance content. I have partnered with brands like IHG Hotels, JW Marriott, Alaska Airlines, Capital One, Chase, Bombay Sapphire, Derma E and numerous other beauty and fashion brands.
I think what sets me apart is my personal finance section. Many blogs cover food, travel or fashion, but being able to offer sound financial tips for saving, budgeting and being more financially savvy is the area that really differentiates me from the rest.
My sister brand, Busy Wife Social Life has really taken off since we’ve moved to LA. So many small businesses need assistance in the social media space. Whether coaching or full management, they want to spend time concentrating on what they do best… running their business. With the rise of social and influencer marketing, we branched out into this market at just the right time.
What is “success” or “successful” for you?
I think everyone defines their own success. There is no set amount of money or number of clients that make you successful. I feel when people start looking up to you and emulating your work, you have reached a level of success, but there are always bigger goals on the horizon! Additionally, I feel that integrity is a huge part of it, you can’t leave the people behind who have helped you get to where you are and success doesn’t come from stepping on people to reach the top.
