Today we’d like to introduce you to Shelli Melkonian.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I always knew I wanted to be in the fashion industry from a young age. When I was in college, I did a lot of different types of internships (ex wholesale showroom, celebrity stylist, sales management) to get experience in all fields. Dipping my feet into all of these different types of experiences was such a huge advantage in learning different fields of the fashion industry and lead me to realize I wanted to be in the boutique world.
As I did these internships, I also always worked in retail, but for bigger stores. It was all a great experience, but I knew I had to move to working for a boutique to learn more. I found a boutique that I was able to work and, and then quickly managed to learn the ins and outs of the boutique world. Having that hands on experience was just what I needed to feel ready to branch out on my own.
When the boutique I managed closed is when I took the leap to open Style Society Boutique in April of 2016. It was exciting, scary, and a rush all at the same time. I have since then moved to a larger location, continuing to build my in store and online presence.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
It was a smooth transition going from managing a boutique to owning a boutique because my heart is so in the industry. I absolutely love being in store and connecting with customers on a personal level. My passion is what drives me to do better and be better.
The most challenging experience by far was adapting to the shutdowns of COVID. I had to really shift my approach, strategies and pour a lot of time into my digital presence. I made sure to do different and be different and go over and beyond for my customers. I was on survival mode.
On top of the challenges of surviving COVID, I unexpectedly had to move locations, which turned out to be the biggest blessing in disguise. To say I was over my head in 2020 is an understatement, but I made it out and now know I can handle anything thrown my way.
We’ve been impressed with Style Society Boutique, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
Style Society Boutique offers fashion-forward clothing and accessories that won’t break the bank. Our style is “LA edge meets OC ease”. Our experience is like no other, it’s like you’re shopping in your best friend’s closet. Our vibe is casual, inviting and relaxing. You can always find something unique with us.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Don’t compare yourself to others. Everyone is on their own journey and timeline.
