Today we’d like to introduce you to Shellese Zeigler.
Shellese, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
Throughout my years as a young girl, I have always had the desire to create and design. I grew up watching my mother spend countless hours sewing together my costumes, uniforms and cheerleading outfits for school. At the age of 9, I was introduced to hand sewing in my after school program. I couldn’t get my mind off of the craft, and I decided to nurture it by bringing this newfound gift home. I would practice this talent on my mother’s drapes and curtains by sewing them together (sorry mommy! lol) and making outfits that I would later model for my dolls and my family around the house.
In early adulthood, I went to school for things that did not fulfill me and tried different fields of work for the sake of having a stable career, but I knew in my heart that I wanted more. I started styling and landed a few commissions in magazine editorials, photoshoots, Grammy appearances and fashion campaigns featuring top celebrities in the industry. My internship with an upcoming Jewelry Designer gave me the motivation to whole hardheadedly pursue a familiar kind of craft; Jewelry Design. My dream has always been to see others wearing one of my pieces, whether it be Jewelry or apparel. This vision fuels me to be more innovative and trust in God’s voice as he continues to reveal my purpose and direct my path.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an entrepreneur definitely has its ups and downs. I am constantly battling with my purpose and if this is what God has intended for me to do… especially when there are so many gifted people in this world with similar interests. In the beginning of my journey, I questioned Where do I start? What if my designs go unnoticed and what will people think of them? What if my designs aren’t enough to sustain a livable lifestyle? What if… (fill in the blank with any other negative thought you can imagine). I constantly have to set myself apart and be reminded that God has called many people to do different works, but overall it is to reach one common goal.
I often refer to the metaphor of an apple seed. There are many apple seeds but when placed in the right hands, it has the potential to produce much fruit. The apple seed will never produce peaches, or pears, or anything other than apples because that is what God intended for the seed to be. But when you examine that one seed, you’ll find that it’s actually a tree of apples (with seeds) that can continue to produce and feed for a lifetime. When challenges and obstacles come, this is how I remind myself that I can only be what God created me to be and that my purpose here is just as valuable as anyone else’s. As long as I remain consistent and do what I was called to do, the rest will be provided.
